Yesterday I went for my pre-op tests and nutrition class. The doc told me that he wants me to lose 20-30 pounds before the surgery on July 20th. I start the pre-op diet July 5. He thinks that I can do it but I don't know. That is 10 pounds a week for the next 3 weeks and I'm not on the liquid diet yet. I put myself on a 1200 calories diet for this week since I'll be starting the liquid pre-op diet on Sunday. I won't get to exercise today but I took a brisk walk on each of my 15 minute breaks today to at least do something. I'm hungry and tired and afraid that I'll fall off the wagon before it's all over with. The doc told me to step it up a notch. Seems like a mountain from this side that's for sure!

Look for different exercises to shock your body into losing more weight. Try doing high intence running on a tredmill or bike.

Check out this site...they have a lot of great ideas on exercises that might help...also stay focused don't give up and you will be fine.

Good luck,

he wants you to lose the weight so your liver will shrink (makes surgery much easier/safer).... the first thing to do to accompishthat is getting rid of carbs. you don't need to starve but if you could do 15-20 carbs or less a day you will be shocked at, not only how much weight you will lose, but how much your liver will shrink. TELL your doc you are low carbing so that even if you don't lose all the weight he directed, he can expect a smaller liver for surgery:)

good luck...you can do this!!!!

I dont know about the 20 carbs thing that is really low and from my experience nearly impossiable if you want to eat. There are carbs in almost everything with the exception of meats. If you allow healthy carbs to be taken in it will sure help with losing that 20-30 lbs that your doc has asked you to lose. I did not have to do any long term pre-op diets only day before liquid only and in just that one day I had lost 6 bs and walked out of the hospital 10lbs lighter, not bad for just two day even with all the IV Fluid. I think as long as you follow the direction of your doc and use the Protein shakes as directed and have only healthy carbs (veggies, low-fat dairy) then you should be fine. I dont eat any bread, Pasta, or rice and those are the ones you should stay away from. Hope that helps. Dont be so down get excited the new you is about to be born!

20 carbs per day is the medicaly directed 2-week "induction phase" on virtually all low carb diets... many continue the induction phase for months to get rid of the pounds faster. i did it for 4 months and lost 35 pounds. it is hard AT FIRST, but very doable, and after the first week, carb cravings go away and it is actualy quite easy.

my surgeon's clinic of 3 surgeons "officially" recommends a liquid diet for 10 days before surgery... but then my surgeon instructd me one on one that he really doesn't care HOW i diet before surgery...he just wants the liver smaller and said he would be happier with low carb induction than with just the liquids. the effect on the liver is quicker.

there are many ways to lose weight for the short term and many will give you good advice. take the advice that you personaly think you can stick to for the 2 weeks. what works for one may not work for another.

best of luck!!

I lost a pound a day on the preop diet my surgeon gave me. You may not lose 30 pounds but you'll lose a good deal. Just follow the guidelines. If your doc thinks you can do it, odds are he's had patients who have "done" it.

AND if your doc gives you a diet, USE IT. Not something you liked from the past, or something someone says "worked for them". Just follow your doc's orders and you'll get through it! :P
