July 1st Surgery Stories

Hi gang,

Well, its day 5 post-op for me and I'm now starting to feel almost normal again. :-) For the past nights I have slept quite well on both sides, although my left side is probably a bit more comfortable. Today I started the full liquid diet which means I can have real Soup...yippee...I'm off the broths. For lunch today I'm going to have cream of chicken soup...who knew I could get so excited over cream of chicken Soup. Oh...am I'm down 5 lbs since Monday morning...not bad since I was up 5 lbs the day after surgery because of all of the Fluid during the surgery. I'm now officially down 20 lbs and all of this in less than one month. So, I'm off to a good start and am looking forward to getting back to work next week.

How is everyone else doing this fine Saturday morning? Actually...not to fine in Ontario...we have a rip roaring thunder storm coming in...I love these big storms!

Take it easy all...

Cheers,

Mary

Good morning, Mary!

Okay, I'm jealous about your thunderstorms. It's another sweltering hot day here in Texas, and it's not even 10 am yet!

I'm feeling pretty good these days, too. I slept in my bed again last night, and it was pretty comfortable, so I'm happy about that. I've been a little more emotional than usual since the surgery, but I'm learning to deal with it.

Last night I found myself scrounging around the kitchen looking for SOMETHING to eat that wasn't Soup, Jello, pudding, or Protein shakes. hehe. I finally settled on some instant mashed potatoes (really watered down, since I'm still only at "cream of wheat" stage) but when I started eating them, the taste wasn't nearly as satisfying as I expected it to be!! It was like... what's that?? My friend food isn't as much fun as I remember him being?? I ended up eating only a few bites, and being done. Of course, not to say it would have been that way with something I really love, like mac and cheese, but it was nice to feel some CONTROL...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
