First Fill Today - Questions

Recommended Posts

Banded 5/11, I feel like I can eat anything. Dr. spoke about 2 cc's, but I'm not sure.

Questions I will ask my surgeon:(expected answers)

  • What size Band do I have (10cc)
  • When will I get the next fill (1 month if I need it)
  • Is 2 cc's enough to restrict me (That's all we can do now)
  • How will i know that it's time for a fill You're hungrey between meals)

WHAT ELSE????? :rolleyes2: Help me be prepared.

It looks like you are doing awesome already without a fill. Good job. Your questions seem appropriate to me. Keep in mind that 2cc's might be enough for one person and not nearly enough for another. So that answer might better be (we'll see). My doc only gave me 1 cc at a time and then .5 cc as I got closer to my sweet spot.

Give it time. I didn't feel any restriction until 2 weeks after my first fill. It still wasn't enough but I did finally start to feel what people had been talking about. You will get there. Keep up the awesome work!!!

I agree with all the replies you have had. BTW, I am near goal with only 2.5cc in a 10cc band.

This is so good to know! I was banded on 5/21, and had my first fill on 6/29. I didn't feel anything that first day at all, and the second day I ate an entire roast beef sandwich, bread and all, and didn't feel anything! I started to worry that I needed another fill already, but finally on the third day I started feeling fuller after eating just 4 - 5 ounces, and I'm feeling fuller for longer as well. I'm glad to know that I am not the only one who didn't feel anything immediately afterwards! :tongue2:

I got my first fill on 6/30/09. I am really afraid of needles. My NP was very good. She gave me a numbing shot first. That was a little stick with a little stinging. When she gave me the shot for the actual fill, I did not know she had stuck me. It was not bad at all.

Lauren I hope I have the same experience you had. I do not feel any restriction with a 3cc fill. I hope it kicks in soon.

The needle stick is not that bad. I was really nervous about it, but I barely even felt it. The worst part, for me, was right before the needle stick, when the NP had to push and press around to find the port. It was a little uncomfortable, but not painful.

You'll be fine!! :tongue_smilie:

With my first fill I felt it about 3 weeks later - it wasn't true restriction, just that I really didn't want to eat as much. Just had my 3rd fill last week (at 5.5 cc in a 10 cc band) and I definitely have restriction now.

The signs that you need a fill:

hungry between meals

not losing weight

With my second fill I really didn't feel much difference and I was hungry about every 3 hours. This last fill really made a difference. I have had to take small bites and chew the heck out of them and it is only taking a small amount to fill my pouch.

We are all so different, you just have to see how your body responds to it. Good luck!!!

Hello! I got my first fill today (7/7/09). I now have 3.2ccs in a 10cc band. Since it was my first fill, I had to drink some barium swallow and have the fill done w/ a fluoroscope. I thought I was doing ok until I got REALLY hot, started sweating like a pig, and heard a rushing noise. The nurse had me lay down on a table and put cold rags on my forehead and the back of my neck. After a few minutes, I felt well enough to sit up and drink sips of Water. I'm not sure why I got so woozy. I didn't watch the nurse put the needle into my port, but I did watch everything that was happening on the x-ray. OH well... the pain was minimal and I am looking forward to my next fill on Aug 1.

sweetbean - I hope that doesnt happen to me when I get my first fill! I have been having some anxiety attacks lately...and they are brought on easily! I could see that happening

I had the same response with my first fill and I wasn't watching any of it. I came pretty close to passing out, but they had me lie down and did the cold cloth, and when I went back in it went just fine. I didn't feel like I was particulary anxious about it, but they thouht maybe that's what it was.

I had my first fill today. I barely felt the needle, and it was over before I knew it. They put 4cc in a 10cc band.

I have to be on liquids for 2 days, then mushies for 2 more.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
