Received my medical packet today and have a ? about the forever eating?

Recommended Posts

My booklet states that you should avoid: Dry meat, Peanut Butter, shrimp, untoasted or doughy bread, Pasta and rice, corn, celery and asparagus, dried fruit, coconut, popcorn, nuts, seeds and skins and fruits and veggies, greasy or fried food. FOREVER

I get some of the things (like the fatty foods), but PB, popcorn, pasta and rice, nuts, and for goodness sake the skins of fruits and veggies? Can someone tell me why better than this booklet does: it says it has difficulty passing thru the opening of the stoma and may cause blockage. How does pasta and rice get stuck in a stoma? Or anything else if it's chewed properly? I don't plan on swallowing anything whole! I was just curious if anyone else got these same instructions?

Oh well, if I have to eat mashed potatoes and applesauce forever to get this weight off I will! I will certainly miss my peanut butter, popcorn, shrimp, and pasta.

Oh, I have my:Dietitians appt, My education appt with the nurse, my Dr's appt, and my psych eval all on Aug 10th (I live 3.5 hrs away, so they thought they'd get it in all on the same day) Get this- I live in the same town where they have a bariatric center, but Medicare doesn't cover that facility. So I have to travel every 4-6 weeks 3.5 hrs to get my fills. Oh well. I'll do just about anything at this point.

Blessings!

Marci

It seems everyone is different and so are their doctors. All the things you mentioned were off limits for a while but then I was able to add things back, in moderation of course. Different foods bother people. I don't eat bread but I know it bothers a lot of people. Dry chicken can be a problem for me as well as soy Beans. I eat a bag of 100 calorie popcorn every night and a lot of apples with skins (chew chew chew) with no problems. I also eat shrimp every so often. I know many of us eat nuts. I do not eat fried foods and really think it is a good idea to give them up. I have had a problem with celery but I know I didn't chew it well enough. I think it is a good idea to listen to your doctor then after several months you can see what bothers you. A word of caution, getting stuck is no fun! Chew chew chew. Good luck on your journey

Everyone's problem foods are different, although things like bread, Pasta, and rice are typical problem foods. No matter how much you chew those tings, once you swallow they tend to just congeal back together again and can get stuck. I presonally have not had any problems with anything I've tried yet but I don't have a tone of restriction. I've never heard about Peanut Butter and nuts before. Those are strange ones to me.

Its trial and error with a band to see what foods suit. I personally can eat rice but not Pasta, I eat most veggies, can eat strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches and plums need to be peeled, can't do apples or pears even with the skin off. I eat brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts and hazel nuts. I eat a little Peanut Butter too.

Don''t worry, once banded you will find a nice range of healthy foods you can eat.

to be honest, that's nothing more than the opinion of whomever wrote the book. There are NO hard and fast rules with banded eating and anyone who makes it sound like there is is really misrepresenting it.

You may be able to eat ALL of those foods, or you may be able to eat NONE of them. They are common problem foods, but personally, I can eat all of them, and popcorn I can literally inhale, I can eat it so fast and easily.

Anything, even liquids, can cause you to vomit if you ingest them to quickly, anything can get stuck in your stoma. You WONT always chew properly, you wont be that perfect, you will forget, you will accidentally swallow a mouthful, you may take too big a bite and eventually, it will happen. There are also just foods that your stomach plain wont like, probably amongst that list, as well as others. Some things are just weird, there seems to be no reason why you cant eat them. Cold orange juice will make me vomit every single time, yet how can THAT get stuck?

This is a bit of a "seat of your pants" ride, you wont know till you've done it how it is for you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
