Swallowing difficulties - 3 weeks post op

Recommended Posts

Three weeks after my banding surgery, I am having a hard time swallowing anything (even liquids). What happens is that the stuff goes down - slowly - but then I feel like I have to clear my throat constantly and my neck is stiff. I also burp uncomfortably a lot. I've looked over the forums and this appears to happen to those who have had too much of a fill. However, I only have a new (3 week old) band! The problem is now complicated by the fact that my hunger has returned. So I am STARVING and I cannot get enough nutrition.

My daily calorie intake is less than 500 calories, and I think after 3 weeks my body is rebelling. Help!

I think you should call your surgeon/dr. first thing! This doesn't sound normal to me. The only thing I can think of is that your stomach is swollen but....after 3 weeks it shouldn't be. Could be it slipped upwards???? Has it been like this the whole 3 weeks?

Call your doc. Good luck!

Definitely call your Dr. !That doesn't sound right, is it possible your band was insert with a some fill (some surgeons do that). I'm at the three week mark too and have little restriction- officially in bandster hell.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Did you try to eat solids while you were supposed to still be on liquids? If so, that could explain swelling which could cause some of your issues. And if you keep trying to eat solids while still swollen, then you're not giving yourself time to un-swell.

Another possibility, like another poster said, is that your doctor put in some fill at surgery (mine did), and it's too much. That's unusual, though, because most doctors only put it in a little bit, they don't fill you to restriction. But ya never know!!

I'm anxious to find out what your doc says, so let us know!

I have not eaten anything hardly - a few bites of egg salad when I was supposedly allowed to (after 2 weeks). Chewed to death - that's all.

I hope I'm still healing down there, but I don't know. I've emailed my doctor, and he emailed me saying my lapband was probably tight which means I'll get a good result. I emailed him Wednesday and said I'm still having trouble but have not heard back.

could you possibly feeling tight because it's that time of the month? From my understanding that sometimes happens

I think your doctor is failing to acknowledge that there is such a thing as TOO tight, which you may be. Not being able to swallow is NOT "a good result." You should probably go ahead and make an appoint to discuss this with him. Maybe in person, he'll take you more seriously. ? Just a thought.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
