Okay so I know this isn't the most pleasant question but I was wondering whether I am alone in this. I got banded a week okay today and still have yet to have a regular bm. Did anybody else encounter this? The only time I have ever had anything was when I had fat free no sugar added ice cream without taking my lactose intolerance pill first and it certainly wasn't a "normal" BM. I have been taking colase almost everyday since surgery but still nothing.. Anyone else have this?

I was banded on 6/15 and didn't have a bm until 6/20. Part of the problem was the pain pills, I was taking Darvocet. Darvocet causes Constipation. Are you on pain pills at all?

Are you still on a liquid diet? if so ----- liquids in, liquids out. I had surgery 6/15 and didn't have a normal BM until I was onto soft foods, Post-Op Day 8

I agree with both of the previous answers to your questions. I was banded 6/17 and took a laxative that helped me however I did suffer from some Constipation.

I hope you get back to being regular soon. That is definitely no fun.

Yes, I don't think I had one until I started mushies about a week after surgery. I urge you to keep up on the colace!!! I stopped after I went off meds and not too be to graphic but had one of the most painful experiences of my life one morning on the toilet. :blushing:I thought I was going to pass out.

I just mentioned on another thread how helpful a few cups a day of black coffee were with this problem, (if your doctor allows you to have it, of course!)

Once I started mushies, I found that an old wives remedy, a small piece of soft liquorice (licorice in the USA!), helped to move things along nicely on that front. I had the non fat, organic variety, but I have heard you can drink it as a tea or take the pills as well.

Hello, , Keep up with the fluids and exercise will help, too. walk, if you can. I found coffee, even a cup of hot green tea to be helpful. if there are no solids in your system, you will not have a movement until you start on 'mushies'.:) If you feel constipated and the usual methods don't work, suggest you contact your surgeon.

I am in the same boat as you...haven't had a bm since 6/17..I wasnt really worried because I am not really regular and go on average once or twice a week. Not to mention I didn't really eat 3 days post op execpt a very small amount of Water and the liquid pain meds (I have lortab) one of the main side effects is constipation...so I am finally on mushies today and I am going to give it a couple of days.

Remember with the reduced calories your eating there is really not much waste. Your body uses up all of the nutrients. I didn't have normal bm's untill about my third month. Even now its usually every other day. I took Fiber supplement like benifiber which seemed to help. Ducolax was a good send during that time. Eat food high in fiber. By the way I listend to a conference call (this is my job as I run them) and they had world renowned experts talking about bm's. go figure there is specialist in this area. But they said there is a mis-conception that 'normal' is once a day. They said that is totally false. going once every 2-3 days is normal. If you go every day your eating a lot more than you should, hence the waste you have to get rid of everyday. Make sense to me...Actually was a disgusting but interesting conference call.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
