Hey everyone so I was just wondering what everyones doctors told them about caffeine. I know it is advised against after surgery but I'm a barista, there is no way I can never drink coffee again. I was wondering if maybe if I just had Decaf? Not anytime soon considering I just had surgery but I was thinking months down the line. Do you think having decaf would be that big of a deal? I used to drink a TON of caffeine. At least 4 shots of espresso and an energy drink or 2 per day so just let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Hi Meghan,

I think decaf would be fine, but I would be sure to speak to your physician about it. I can no longer drink caffeine and was actually glad I kicked that habit a few months back. I have ulcers I didn't know I had. Caffeine actually increases acids in your stomach, which is why I can't have it anymore.

But, I would definitely talk to your doc about the decaf.

I had coffee the morning after surgery. The hospital gave it to me on my tray. Not sure if it was decaf or not. I have iced coffee almost every day. I was just told no carbonation so that's why I cut out my diet soda. And caffeine dehydrates you so you have to up your Water intake, from what I understand.

I haven't been told no caffeine. I'm a tea drinker , which still has caffeine in it, and i drink as much of the stuff as I ever did. Its one vice I'm not likely to give up and the NUT said tea was fine.

I got told no caffeine but just in the pre and post op phases. After that I was told it was ok as long as I was taking in enough other fluids. I too have a iced coffee almost everyday

I actually have a funny story on this topic that I've told before, but WTH... I'll tell it again.

I drink LOTS of caffeinated coffee... So in the recovery room they were giving me ice chips and asked if I wanted anything... Of course I wanted coffee. The nurse said there was no way I was getting any that day, but perhaps the following morning I could. Right after that my surgeon walked through and asked how I was doing. I told him I'd be better if I had some coffee. So the nurse asked him when I could have some and after learning I wasn't at all nauseated he said, "go ahead and give it to him." So there I was in the recovery room sipping coffee.

Apparently that made it through the talking points for the nurses that day, because the night nurse that I had said, "I can't believe they gave you coffee in the recovery room!"

Anyway... Caffeine is one of those strange topics among WLS patients. Some swear you can never drink it again - while others (myself included) drink just as much as pre-surgery. Bottom line... Discuss it with your doctor and find a manageable course of action.

Like most things band-related - it's a "your mileage may vary" issue.

Good luck! Brad

My doctor has no problem with his patients drinking coffee. In fact I had a black coffee a few hours after surgery, with no problems at all. I found it great in those first few days as it helped to, er, unclog the pipes.

I think because caffeine acts as an appetite stimulant, some physicians frown on it. I assume energy drinks are also verboten because of the carbonation...not to mention the empty calories they contain!

Was a coffee drinker before my surgery and thank goodness my surgeon lets me have it. I had it the day after my surgery and have had some every day since :) I like it, I want it, I need it!!! I've given many things up.. thank goodness I didn't have to give up my coffee!!! Becky

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
