Newbie: has to lose 10% before surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I kinda have a situation and I'm not real sure about what to do. My ins. covers the surgery but I it says:

The attending physician must submit records that the individual has successfully lost 10% of their initial body weight prior to the date authorization is requested. The attending physician must be someone other than the surgeon and the attempt must be within the prior 2 years

So I asked the lady at the bariatric center, does this mean I have to lose 10% before I have the surgery and she said yes. I don't mind losing the 10percent but I calculated it and my bmi will be like a 34something after I lose. The ins. also says your BMI has to be 40 or higher, or 35 and higher with comorbidities.

So what now?? I lose the 10% and then not qualify for surgery?? Has anyone ever been through this situation? Thanks for your help!

Good question. I'm in the same situation. I'll be interested what the answer to that is too. I am just starting the process and have my first seminar July 7.

Dont Worry about it, they use the weight that you started with when you came in for your first visit. If your still worried just say you are a inch smaller than you really are they dont check.

That's crazy!!! (in a good way) I never even thought of the whole height thing. A very simple solution. Thanks for the idea Yankee

And let me add...that is a huge sigh of relief! Come all this way to not even be able to have the surgery...that would have been awful!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
