sandokat 9 Posted June 23, 2009 Hi all. I was banded 10/1/09. On Feb 16th I had to have the port out because of infection. (Also had my gallbladder removed at the same time). On April 16th they replaced the port at a different location. On May 29th they had to remove it again because of infection. It is a common staff infection, but I got very sick. Has this happened to anyone else? Are you still losing weight? I still have the band and do have some restriction. I hope I can end up at least keeping the band. silvers320 12 Posted June 23, 2009 I am a member of the two-fer club also. First port went in July 08 - came out in Nov 08. The second one went in Jan 09 and by the first week of Feb it was starting to show signs of infection. Thankfully, the doc put me on IV antibiotics which mean a trip to the hospital every day for two weeks, which was a pain but it saved the port.
Petalpusher 1 Posted June 23, 2009 What can cause the port to become infected 4 months out?
silvers320 12 Posted June 24, 2009 No way to tell. It was more then likely there for a month or so before I called the doc.
sandokat 9 Posted June 24, 2009 In my case it did not hurt but didn't feel right. It wasn't until I started having gall bladder attacks, and the port site got a big lump that we knew it was infected. In my case I originally had an infection in the incision where the pain pump was. The staff could have travelled down that line to the port. The infectious disease doctor thinks that maybe there was staff on the tube from the band to the port that may have infected the 2nd site. I am just hoping I don't have to lose the band. I have not lost a lot (77-79 lbs since September) but I feel so much better without the weight. I need to lose about 75-100 more. I am scared I won't be able to get to a healthy weight.
