Port Infection - twice

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I was banded 10/1/09. On Feb 16th I had to have the port out because of infection. (Also had my gallbladder removed at the same time). On April 16th they replaced the port at a different location. On May 29th they had to remove it again because of infection. It is a common staff infection, but I got very sick.

Has this happened to anyone else? Are you still losing weight? I still have the band and do have some restriction. I hope I can end up at least keeping the band.

I am a member of the two-fer club also. First port went in July 08 - came out in Nov 08. The second one went in Jan 09 and by the first week of Feb it was starting to show signs of infection. Thankfully, the doc put me on IV antibiotics which mean a trip to the hospital every day for two weeks, which was a pain but it saved the port.

No way to tell. It was more then likely there for a month or so before I called the doc.

In my case it did not hurt but didn't feel right. It wasn't until I started having gall bladder attacks, and the port site got a big lump that we knew it was infected. In my case I originally had an infection in the incision where the pain pump was. The staff could have travelled down that line to the port. The infectious disease doctor thinks that maybe there was staff on the tube from the band to the port that may have infected the 2nd site.

I am just hoping I don't have to lose the band. I have not lost a lot (77-79 lbs since September) but I feel so much better without the weight. I need to lose about 75-100 more. I am scared I won't be able to get to a healthy weight.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
