Was there something you "had" to have pre-surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm being banded on July 10th and I am super excited. However, I can not help the urge to go to the all you can eat crab leg and filet buffet with my family before surgery.

Was there a restraunt, food type or specific food you just had to have before surgery in case you couldn't tolerate it after?

Share!

P.S I know this isn't a good way to think or do, please try not to flame me. I'm just curious what everyone wanted as their "last meal"

Well, after surgery you can still eat crab -- but probably not going to get your money's worth at an all you can eat anything ever again. But, trust me, that's not bad.

Most of us can eat almost everything that we ate before surgery, but the band is supposed to help you with Portion Control. Obviously, there are things you shouldn't eat because they aren't healthy .... like fried stuff, stuff with gravy, etc. But remember: this is not signing up for a lifetime of punishment! You are getting help with the problem all overweight people have .... the AMOUNT they eat. Now, there may be a few foods that don't work for you post banding ... or maybe not. I don't do too well with fresh bread (it turns into a sticky ball and gets stuck) and white rice (same thing)...and flour tortillas, sometimes do the same thing. Do I miss them? Well, not really, because they are such minor items in the scheme of things.

Having said all that, almost everybody ends up having a "last supper" where they eat whever they want in whatever quantity.

Thai food, my husband son and I went to our favorite restaurant and had dinner, they have lovely lean meat and fresh veggies, I knew the meat would be ok after, but was not sure about some of the fresh veggies. i.e. broccali, asparagus... Having been banded for almost a month now I think the only thing I have really had trouble with is bread and broccali, yep, lightly steamed broccali did not work well.. otherwise, ok. Have 1st fill in 2 weeks and then start the food checks all over again.

Cathy, thank you for your response. I am aware that one day I will still be able to eat everything just in smaller and healthier quantities.

That is why I added the P.S to my thread. I'm just curious what everyone ate right before surgery as their last meal.

Before my pre-surgery diet, I had a big Chili's Cheeseburger with fries. Looking back I can't believe I ate the whole thing. Yesterday I had a small 1/6th lb burger at Braums and no fries (6 WW points). I was stuffed but enjoyed every bite. So, you can still enjoy things just in smaller quantities.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
