Losing without exercise????

So from what I've been reading it seems like a lot of people lose weight with the band without exercising? Is this true?

I am questioning because I have never been able to lose even a pound without exercising a lot. I plan on going back to my gym (that I pay the membership fee for every month without going now :) I have dreams of being tone and sexy!!! Owww!!! LOL!!!

I am also one of those people who had to excercise to lose any weight. I lost 30kg about 2 years ago by going to the gym 2hrs a day, 7 days a week....but as soon as I stopped, the weight just came straight back on. I was banded on May 7 and have lost about 12kgs (26.4lbs) already...without much exercise at all ( I don't go to the gym or anything). I do plan however to start exercising as the weight has started to stagnate the last couple of weeks...exercise always helps, but yes, you do lose weight without exercising when banded.

The primary contributor to "weight" loss/gain is calories. Exercise burns calories.

Eating Adds calories.

If you intake less calories than you burn you lose weight.

If you intake more calories than you burn you gain weight.

The band, in combination with better food choices reduces your calorie intake. You should lose weight without changing your burn. You can speed up weight loss by burning more.

(now im sure 20 people will respond swearing they never lost a pound until they exercised ha ha).

I cannot attribute my weight loss to exercise. However, I am at a plateau, so I think that it's going to take exercise in order for me to move forward and lose the rest of the weight.

Omg I love this thread.

I've lost about 45 pounds from my highest point and about 33 since banding back in October, 08.

I have not lost a single pound even though I'm basically at my sweet spot! It totally sucks, and I'm going to have to ACTUALLY (instead of theoretically) exercise if I plan on losing any more weight.

What a rude awakening!

It's like I have to start out all over again, and maybe it will re-start the weight loss.

I'm going to begin tracking my exercise when I begin as I find I get very obsessive about things when I record them. I highly doubt I will ever go the food recording route. Most people swear by it, but it just doesn't seem like a practical solution for me.

Keep in mind that you also need to incorporate strength training exercise into your exercise regime if you are losing weight. Without doing that, you risk losing lean tissue (muscle tissue), as your body tries to prevent you from long-term starvation damage.

That means it preserves the fat stores, which is one of the many reasons why people who lose weight from reducing calories gain back even more weight once they are off the low-calorie diet.

When you use the muscles as you are losing weight, the body will preserve that tissue and consume the fat tissue instead.

So, aerobic AND anaerobic are both required for safe, healthy weight loss.

Plus, if you're a woman, strength training triggers the bones to maintain density. Really important, especially as we age. And don't worry, women are very unlikely to "bulk up," for a variety of reasons.

PS: the more lean tissue you preserve, the quicker you start burning calories because muscle tissue takes more energy (calories) to maintain than fat tissue does (which is one reason why the body tries to dump it when we lower our calories for an extended period of time). But if we're USING it, it will burn calories while we are at rest easier, and burn those from fat (adipose) tissue instead.

I am by now means the poster child so totally don't quote what I have to say.

I was banded Feb 09 and have lost about 40lbs without exercise. I lost 20 lbs the first month after surgery and then then fluctuated between the same 5 lbs for the next 3 months. I got my 3rd fill about a month ago and then suddenly my weight loss took off! Been losing 3-5 lbs per week and have lost about 20 more lbs in the last month. So many bandsters have said that it takes a few fills for the wieghtloss to start. And I'm starting to agree.

My wife was banded12/08 & can't exercise due to her back & knee condition & has lost 65lbs. I've lost 71 lbs but I've had to exercise for every lbs of it.

I've always found exercise a better preventer of weight gain than it is a cause of weight loss. I can run 10km in an hour and burn 1000 calories - now that is quite effective exercise which will contribute to weight loss. But if you can only walk slowly for half an hour and burn 250 calories, hmmm, not so much. Your loss is going to be more dependent on what you eat.

But the two go hand in hand. What exercise does for your body in terms of its composition and condition cant be underestimated and almost without exception successful bandsters are dedicated exercises. It makes the difference between being a 50% statistic and losing 100% of your weight, it provides a focus and goals that are helpful in the journey, it shapes your body and makes it healthier, honestly, you're mad not to work exercise into your schedule.

And when it comes to being able to indulge a little and not gain weight, exercise is your best friend.

Since I started at such a high weight on surgery day 344, I probably could have gotten away with loosing for a while regardless of exercise but I jumped off the surgical table ready with an exercising plan. For the last 2.5 months I have walked 2.5 miles 3 times a week and for the last 2 weeks I have added a 1 mile jog 3 times a week. And what Jachut said is true, you make time to exercise or your frustrated. I never thought there would be a time when I would look forward to jogging.

And since I am losing weight at a good pace,( most likely due to the exrecise) my doc's not ready to give me my first fill.

Last week at 304 I decided to put my scale in the closet because I really want to see the scale say 2?? .

That will be a big day for me. But in the meantime I got a lot of miles to log so I'm off for a walk!!!!

I just met Dr. Feng yesterday. He seems like a great surgeon. Unfortunately he does not take my insurance. BUMMER! But he did educate me on the 4 surgeries he does!

obvisiously, i havent been banded ..yet (hopefully soon).. but according to my nutritionist and some on here, if you dont start an exercise routine as soon as your able, you're more likely to get flabby skin. i know most get it anyways, but with exercise it reduces the amount and adds muscle mass which aids in the apperance as well. the longer you put it off, the greater the chance you'll regret it later..

again....what ive been told.not personal experience. you sound alot like me and i know i want to look toned as well as skinny. i would hate to be skinny and still have to cover up because im insecure of my loose skin.

I really appreciate all of your responses - its everything I need to hear. I am so excited to get the band. I'm praying for the best and I know I have to put my all into it. I've heard stories of people that just think the band is magic and then they fail. I don't want to be lazy with the band - being lazy has gotten me to where I am today!

I'm not proud of it, but if I'm being honest, I truly don't exercise like I should. I have good intentions, and go thru spurts of doing good, but honestly, most of the time it doesn't happen. I can give you a variety of reasons (yes, excuses) but I'm sure you've heard them all!

Despite that, I have been very successful. I'm at goal (actually past goal) and really don't have any problems. One of the lucky ones I guess.

I'm not suggesting you not exercise............I think you should. But, you asked if anyone had lost without exercising, so decided to honestly answer.

I lost weight the first five months, then stayed the same for the next three. Decided to join Curves a month ago because it is close to work, all women, and I needed something low impact on the joints. Anyway, the scales are going down again. In fact, someone just made a comment to me about 15 minutes ago that I look like I am "losing a few again". So I would say yes, at some point, exercise does become necessary. Good luck.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
