Early Post-Op Weight Loss?

Recommended Posts

I was banded 5 days ago and have lost 7 lbs. since leaving the hospital, which I realize is from the liquid diet and not much appetite.

I was just wondering how much of this weight loss will stick after I transition to mushies?

Anyone's experience would be helpful.

It is different for everyone, I am in week 4 now. I found that once I started mushies that weight loss slowed dramatically. Also somewhere between week 3 and 4 all the swelling must have gone down because I am getting much more hungry now and the first 2 weeks I was full and satisfied with very little food. So I am in what they call bandster hell and waiting for my first fill which I hope will be similar to the first 2 weeks after surgery where I had restriction with the swelling.

It is true everyone is different and it also depends on whether the Dr fills your band a bit during surgery. I never gained any weight before my first fill and managed to lose a few more pounds. You can expect in the long run to lose an avg of 8-10 pounds a month depending on your activity level and possibly more in the beginning if you have a lot to lose. Men lose much faster of course! Good luck!!

It really is up to you how much of the liquid diet weight loss sticks with you.

If you chose to sit on your butt and 'test' the band, of course you'll gain back. (Not to be harsh, and this is not aimed at you, but too many people expect the band to be a 'quick fix'. I'm certain they think they'll waltz out of the surgery as a skinny person who never has to diet ever again!)

But if you follow your doctor's instructions, keep your calorie intake low (but not drastically so) and exercise regularly you'll do well. It just may take a while to show. (Any mayo Bandito can attest to this!)

And even despite your best efforts, you may still gain. If so, don't beat yourself up as your main focus in the month following the surgery should be on healing your body. Stick to the plan and you WILL get results.

Eventually...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
