Last Meal....Don't over do it!!!

Recommended Posts

I was told at my pre-op appointment to eat and drink anything and everything I wanted.... I over did it. The morning of surgery, I was nervous and sick from what I ate the night before. I threw up 5 times and had to reschedule surgery for the next day.

So, if they tell you to go all out and enjoy your last meal....don't do it!!

I didn't eat much the day before the surgery actually took place because I was so sick.... And I had no nausea after the surgery.

The advice to eat and drink every and anything you want and as much of it as you want the day before major surgery is irresponsible and medically dangerous, as you found out. I would seriously consider another doctor. Such advice would never come from a qualified and experienced bariatric doctor. Most people on here at the very least had to do liquids the day before surgery. For me, it was 2 weeks of liquids only before surgery.

Even for minor surgery most doctors tell you not to eat or drink after midnight. If you stay with this doctor I hope for your sake that your after care is better than your pre surgical advice. Good luck to you.

I was told to do a pre op diet for one week.... Two Protein Shakes, two servings of Protein, green vegetables and one fruit. I decided to do it for 2 and a half weeks. So, I had been doing that....until after the pre-op appointment. The nurses at the surgery center said they would tell the Dr.'s office to stop telling people to have a big "last meal". I had my surgery yesterday and doing ok.... no nausea, just abdominal pain... Thanks for your comment.

I was told to have one last meal (a last supper, as it were) BEFORE my two week pre-op diet.

RobinAnn, ditto. My "last meal" recommendation was also prior to starting my pre-op diet. As it turns out, my "last meal" ended up being a grilled shrimp salad at Cheesecake Factory -- and NO cheesecake! DOH! I was terrified to do too much damage!

I cant believe any doctor would tell someone to do that, the advice is ALWAYS to eat lightly and stop eating about 12 hours before surgery - for ANY surgery. It is life threatening to have food in your stomach when you have an anaesthetic.

Then again, when someone of normal weight tells a disordered eater to have a "last meal" they may be waaaay underestimating what someone will eat. I know someone who ate an entire BUCKET of KFC and had to reschedule their surgery too - her surgeon hit the roof.

It sounds like a more sensible thing to have your "last meal" before the pre op diet. The person that told me is a patient advocate at the Dr.'s office and she was banded 5 years ago. She has lost over 150 pounds!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
