Something for me... and not seeming selfish

Recommended Posts

O.k. we're all in this phase where maybe it's going out and buying new clothes in a size we haven't been able to wear in years, or maybe just rewarding yourself for good behavior (and not with a box of chocolates etc.)

Today, I'm starting the "new me" process. I haven't lost or gained a lb in 2 weeks, I've been a little down in the dumps lately and I finally snapped last week. So this afternoon, I'm starting a mini-makeover process.... I'm cutting and dying my hair. I have what I like to call the fatgirl lazy hair, Which means last year I had a fabulous hair cut and it's gone to Sh*t, I've let the black hair dye grow out-and people are astonished at my natural color- dirty blonde with nat. red & blonde highlights.

Is anyone else doing this, basically a re-birth of the real you?????? I don't mean to sound all sappy & insecure, I'm just in this sort of "self acceptance" phase...... I dunno... Who else?

Sarah, you must post before & after pix of your hair!! It's enlivening to do something drastic and fun like that. I've gone through a few phases in my life where I've chopped off my hair and loved it. I'm in that phase right now (well, have been for the past 3 years). heehee

Have fun!

The DH isn't too thrilled about the Color part.. because I'm going red, and as for the cut, he's not to thrilled about how much I'm cutting off- basically my hair is grown out layers, the bottom being down to my lower back, and the shortist is sholder length, but I think honestly the color thing (going red on red) has him upset. The length, because I have a tatoo in between my sholder blades that freaks him out, so now it covers it, and later, it probably won't... lol...

Sounds like it'll be fun though Sarah. I am getting my hair cut as well, tomorrow. I haven't had it cut since January. My hair is pretty long now, but I don't know what I want to do with it tomorrow....

Ok, have to ask... why does your tattoo freak him out? What is it?

I have been flat ironing my hair for some time now. I really have naturally curly hair and for the past week I'm letting it go natural because my face is looking slimmer and it looks okay now with long (about down to my waist) curly hair. I really don't have a waist line, but I think that my hair would come down to it if I did.

Belz, you may not want to go too short on your hair. Your DH may like it long. I like your tatoo! GB

It's cut, it's dyed and he has no choice but to love it, lol. he actually likes it, It's just been so humid the past 2 days that when I tried to do it myself yesterday it just came out a a red staticy frizzball, and today is no different!!!!! all in all about 10 inches came off

You go, Girl! Enjoy your new 'do'! I've never been too daring with my own hair color - just a light weave, but I admire all of you who try new things!!! I think it is very much our time to be a bit 'selfish' and treat ourselves while we are working so hard to be healthier! I always buy cheap shoes at Payless, and I splurged on 2 pairs of Skeechers so I would have some nice-looking shoes that were comfortable to walk in at work. I also went shopping in the clearance section before work today, and found a few real bargains to wear and feel pretty in while I'm shrinking  It's so fun to wear more stylish clothes vs. my 'fat' wardrobe - I have been receiving so many compliments - very motivating!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
