Eating and Drinking - Together

Recommended Posts

I was told to stop drinking 1/2 hour before meals and resume drinking an hour after meals. Before surgery, this wouldn't have bothered me one bit as I wasn't a big drinker. It seems like just because I'm told I can't, I want to desperately!!

I feel like I need if only a swig of Water to clear my throat after eating. I certainly can't drink a whole glass of water due to restriction, but is a few sips of water so bad?? Any advice you can give, would be helpful.

I was told the same thing. The reason for not drinking right after or while you are eating, is because it the liquid helps to push the food from your pouch faster. so you get hungry sooner than what you would if you didn't drink.

It's still hard for me not to drink right after eating. I have found that getting up right after I am finished eating and starting to clean the kitchen helps a lot. By the time I am finished cleaning, it's time for me to drink.

Once in a while I may take a sip of Water with my meal if I feel like the food is extremely dry. It has been an adjustment to not drink with my meals, however, I hate being hungry more, so I am starting to get used to it.

My hubby's physician recommended that he not drink with his meals either due to reflux. He's not banded, but has problems with alot of mucus (like sliming) and reflux. I figure if that helps to alleviate the reflux issue, I'm all for it. I don't have any reflux issues and don't hope to, but if not drinking with a meal will help, that's what I'll do.

I too have trouble not drinking. I used to LOVE diet coke before surgery and now i switched to Water, but i drink just as much.

my doc told me i was allowed to drink up until the first bite....like if i was at a resturaunt i could drink until the food comes out...and then not to drink for 90 min. after eating.

I find it helpful to not even have any drink at the table with me...if its there i will no doubt take a drink without even thinking about it. i have to admit if i have something hot or spicy i do have a couple sips with my food.

i find it helpful to get up and do something after ive eaten too...i need the distraction so i dont fixate on the fact that i cant drink anything. LoL

Hi, I was banded 6 weeks ago. I find if I am drinking and eating the it is like the band is not there. So when I am following the program I do not drink when I am eating as it defeats the purpos of the band and leads to weight gain etc. I also find this is true if I am eating very liquid foods like chile.

Good luck you do get used to it.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
