Hello all - Six years of LapBand livin' here

Recommended Posts

My name is Kath and I had the lap band put in when I was 17, back in December 2003. On the day of my op I weighed 160kgs (350 pounds)..

Six years later, I weigh 75 kgs (about 168 pounds?).

I'm from Melbourne Australia. I have mixed feelings about my surgery.

I've come here to seek some answers, and see if others have experienced the same things as I have. I also see lots of people new to their band-lifestyle, so I guess I'm a bit of an old hand. I might even prove helpful, who knows.

Hi there! I'm in year three of my lap-band. Off to a great start but my weight loss fizzled out in my second year (mostly due to my lifestyle at the time), so I'm hoping year three is more productive. I still have at least 50 pounds to go.

Look forward to talking with you here!!

Christine

Can I ask why you have mixed feelings about your surgery. I think that sounds great>>350 to 168 lbs, you rock! My surgery is 7/7/09. I am getting excited now. Ready to go shopping for some cute clothes.

Fatleen,

Why mixed feelings? From where I stand I hope I make as great of progress as you have. Congratulations!

I'm curious about the mixed feelings, too. I'm 10 months post-op and my feelings are uniformly positive. I hope that won't ever change!

I hope you will post over on the General Discussion thread where more people will see a 6+ year bandster and how great you've done. You'll have a wider audience to give you encouragement there.

I'm with you about 350 when I started and I'm down 110 at this point with lots to go but at 16 months post op, I have no regrets.

I too had my band in 2003.. It slipped in 2005 and I had it repositioned.. It has never worked since then. I had it filled and unfilled because too tight (reflux) but no restriction of food..NONE!!! I currently have no fill and have been since 12/08.. Not sure what my next move is, looking at the sleeve, would like to wait and see long term on that .. Anyone switched from band to sleeve and are 5 years out? Is it even 5 years old?

Hi, and welcome to the board.

I had my Lap Band for about 6 years as well;, and it was big failure for me.

Like the others here, I'm curious to know about your second thoughts regarding your surgery.

Share with us!

I would also love to hear about your experience with the band during the past 6 years. I just got my band 2 days ago and I really like to hear from those who have had the band for a long time. Especially those who have had success (seems like you have, congrats!).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
