Does Your Interest in Food Change?

Recommended Posts

For me this was a big concern. I love food, I love really good food but I also used to love crap food. So I was worried how the band who change my tastes.

Because I have slowed the speed at which I eat - I actually really taste what I am eating. So I love food even more then before.

When I go out to eat I no longer HAVE too order the biggest thing on the menu in order to fill my pie hole. I can order what sounds good.

My desire for crap food (chips, candy etc) is all but gone. There are some days when I really, really want it- and I let myself have it but I now happy with a hand full of chips as oppose to 1/2 a bag.

I eat things these days I wouldn't have touched before. So much of my diet was bread pre band that I didnt know what I was missing with Beans, and chili, etc

I still enjoy the things I enjoyed before. Just am happy with less of it. I rarely waste space in my pouch with foods that I do not like or are not of high quality. It is just not worth it.

Mine has. I find myself preferring foods based on how long they keep me full. I fortunately can still eat anything (including white bread, dry poultry, etc). I still enjoy food very much but I think about it WAY less. I don't weigh or count or portion out a little of this or that. I just choose filling things, eat till I'm "satisfied", then am good for about 6 hours. I feel in control now, that's the biggest difference.

Yes it does change. I'm not obsessed with food the way I was before and most of the time I can look away and not even think about eating that cookie. That's not to say I don't occasionally indulge but do I buy them anymore - no I don't. I'm at the point where I tell myself is it really worth getting fat over eating that? No it's not and I occupy myself with doing something else. I also do not crave sweets like I used to either. I prefer to eat fruits and veggies over junk food.

Yes.. to some degree it has definitely changed. I seem to like stronger flavors now. I've just recently started drinking coffee too. Never drank it before in my life. I also find if I don't like something, I mean really like it, I don't eat it. I used to eat Desserts (and other things) even if they weren't that great, but now I'm really picky. It has to really wow me for me to want to use up the space in my pouch and spend my calories on it. I wish I could say the cravings for junk food went completely away, they haven't. I do still enjoy salty crunchy Snacks. But I just can't do as much damage as I could before banding. And it's not every day or anything. Just occasionally. Like the others mentioned I feel so much more in control now. Well.. most of the time. I still have my moments..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
