Protein shakes not for weight loss??

Recommended Posts

Something in another post sparked my curiosity about Protein Shakes having an ingredient that did not help you to lose weight but rather to plateau or even gain. In checking out my GNC Protein (Wheybolic Extreme 60, three scoops for 60 grams, 280 cals, I use one scoop) which I was informed was closest in makeup to Isopure but less expensive, the bag states clearly "not for weight reduction"--ACK!

My Dr has never recommended protein, but I was using it in a shake in the morning because of being more restricted at that time and just for that protein boost when I'm not eating my protein.

So what now? Is this not true for bandsters? I'm wondering if this is why I plateau every month before a fill. Or that could just be my paranoia...help!

??? I've lost weight wonderfully using the Protein Shake (EAS Carb Control AdvantEDGE shakes) my doc uses for pre-op diets. If something is labeled "not for weight loss" that doesn't mean you can't lose weight while ingesting it, just that it isn't formulated to be a total Meal Replacement or used solely in a diet. It may have too much fat or other components of some sort (the one you describe) to be considered "dietetic". I think my Protein Shakes are a marvelous meal replacement and find them indispensible.

I love my Protein shakes! I find that if I slack off in drinking them that my weight loss slows. I get a killer boost in weight loss if I take a couple of days and bump up my Protein Shakes.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
