How long before you went back to work/school?

Recommended Posts

I breezed through my surgery like a champ and I can still say there's no way on earth I'd have been ready to work a new job on the Monday after my Friday surgery.

You should talk to your supervisor/boss. Tell him/her you're willing to come in but don't want to do a poor job either (and what if you are in pain and need the more powerful prescription pain meds? They'll think you're loony!) Let your boss make the call. For me, I'd rather have an employee honestly tell me what she was doing, and why...and have her/him take a few days off, rather than come in and perform poorly.

I had surgery on Thursday and was back at an office job on Monday. My surgery went very well so that might have helped. Also, I was taken to my room at 5:30 pm (late surgery time due to a complication on the surgery prior to mine) and was up walking the next morning at 7:30 am. Walked every hour until I was discharged at 6:00 that evening. It hurt but was tolerable. And I did not want the gas to get too big of a jump on me and walking is one of the best way to "let fluffers".

I walked very very soon after my surgery...an hour or two? (husband is an RN, I was a student, I KNOW how important walking is post op, so I was ON it! LOL) but I still wouldn't have been ready to go back to work that soon. I did have surgery on Fri and went to class on Tues afternoon...but failed a VERY basic math test. (it was one of those where later the teacher asked me for the answers which I did IN MY HEAD and got right...why on earth I wrote down the wrong ones is anyone's guess!)

so...we may "think" we're good to go and may be misinformed a little! LOL Time is good after major surgery.

Today marks 1 week ago I got banded. I still feel awful. Couldn't imagine having to go to work. I thought I would feel much better by now, and am feeling frustrated that I am not. I have a surprise birthday party planned for this Saturday for my husband. Now I am really kicking myself for doing this. I am quite sure I will end up going to bed and missing the entire party that night.

Thanks for all the responses :) I asked my boss for monday and tuesday off and it was no problem. Well that was the good news. A few hours later my entire company was laid off  And you know what's horrible is that it makes me want to EAT EAT and EAT and I'm on my stupid 14 day liquid diet soo.. this is difficult. Atleast I don't have to worry about not being ready to go back I guess :/

Well I can't worry about that stuff now.. my surgery is in the morning :) Atleast I have something to look forward to.

I had surgery on a wed. and was would have been able to go back on Monday. I think 3 days post op i was still a little tired and loopy from the pain meds.

everyone is a little different so it just depends on how your body handles it.

my advice would be to keep your pain under control. take the pain meds every 4-6 hours the first 48 hours whether you feel like you need it or not. it is easier to prevent the pain from coming on than to get rid of it once it is there.

good luck!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
