How long before you went back to work/school?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting banded this Friday.. :blushing: and I JUST started a new job.. so I only requested Friday off hoping that by Monday morning I'll be ready to go. But I'm just hoping that I'm not getting in over my head by trying to go back in 3 days.

It is an office job so it's nothing too strenuous but I don't want to make a bad impression.

So how long did it take you guys to get back to semi normal.. or atleast functioning without too much pain?

Personally I would try & give yourself at least another two day, but thats just me. You are half my age so you've got a lot more energy:smile:

edit to say--perhaps I'll actually answer your question! My surgery was on a Thursday and I went back to work (desk job also) the Monday a week later--so I had 12 days altogether-with weekends

I am also a wimp

Mine is on the 2nd and I am taking off the 6th, because I am already off on the 3rd. I put in my time so I can have the weekend, etc.

I took 5 days off. I was still weak and tired from taking in so few nutrients. The soreness at my incisions was manageable. I didn't really start feeling "normal" again until about 10 day post-op and was still crashed out on the couch watching a Lost marathon 3 days post-op....would have hated to think I had to go back to work then.

I was an IDIOT! I had my surgery on a Tuesday, went back to work on Thursday. I teach and only had a few days left at that point. I also had a class that night and needed to go to it. Needless to say that Friday I had to call in sick because there was no way I could get out of bed. I had so many people tell me on Thursday how horrible I looked and that I needed to go home. Sitting in a desk chair was extremely painful, I couldn't ever get comfortable.

By Monday though I felt 1000 times better and could function at work quite well. If you take those 4 days and do nothing but rest, and you are a fast healer, then you should be fine by Monday for office work.

I had a pretty tough recovery and wasn't able to work until the two week mark. I probably could have at ten days post-op (and I have a desk job), but no earlier. No way! I am so jealous of the people who were back in action in days!

But, the bottom is that everyone reacts differently, and you never know which camp you'll be in, so have a plan in case you need more time!!

My surgery was on the 11th and I was very weak from the liquid diet. Like others have stated everyone is different but I do think a week is the minimum.

Kind of an ambitious time table - I had it done on a Thursday, it was Sunday before I felt like I was fully out of the anesthesia. Pain was not really an issue. I was back at work the following Thursday. I probably could have gone back a day or so earlier, but waited until after the first post-op Dr appt (wasn't supposed to be driving until then :>)

After reading on here how quickly some people recovered, I assumed I would be the same. I wasnt. It took me a full 2 weeks to get back to sort of normal. I couldnt even ride in the car 1 week out b/c I had motion sickness.

My surgeon said this was the norm, and that if you do recover quicker its a blessing but unusual.

Give yourself lots of time, if you can.

I had surgery on a Friday and went back to work the next Thursday. I teach and am on my feet most of the day, which was fine, but I was VERY tired my first 2 days back at work and had to take a nap when I got home.

In hindsight, I'd have stayed out for the rest of the week and returned to work on Monday, but you live and learn!

I had surgery on the 5th and ended up taking two weeks. I think realistically I could have gone back this week, but may Dr. insists on two weeks before writing a work release. It definitely took a good 10 days for me to feel back to normal.

Good luck!!

I know you're supposed to start walking 2 days or so after the surgery. Does anyone think that helps the recovery process?

They had me out of the bed and walking around the hospital floor about 4 hours after the surgery. I was walking all over the house, up & down the stairs the next day.

Walking totally helped--lessen the risk of blood clots and you don't "feel" sick since you aren't spending the whole time sitting or laying down. I was folding and sorting laundry that weekend--didn't want to just sit around.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
