Anyone taking Biotin for their hair?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I've read in several forums that Biotin is a good supplement to take for Hair loss. I haven't lost hair yet but I know from previouse diets I've done that I will probably start losing my hair... :wink2:

Anyway, I've checked at local GNC's and drugstores and have not been able to find any chewable Biotin.

Has anyone found chewable Biotin online? If so please let me know where and what brand is it. I found a couple but I'd really like to try a brand that somebody else has used because the ones I did find I'm not sure if they are safe. I read somewhere that well known brands are safer because they are regulated.

Thanks!

Do a google search. I just ordered some from vitanet.com. I would shop around because after I had placed the order I discovered the shipping is more than the Biotin. Live and learn. Next time I will shop around too. I have some biotin but they are hugh tablets and I don't want to crush them.

Yep and it works great for GROWING more hair. It won't help you keep it!

I was losing hair big time and had little ones growing in on top! LOL! What it has done is keep the hair that I have growing and am growing more and it's all a little faster. I've stopped losing hair now BTW. It's back to the normal loss that I had before surgery.

I take a chewable that I get at my little local health store. It's by Solar Ray. You can google it. Not sure on the spelling, if it's 1 word with only 1 R or 2 words. They have a line of supplements so they should pop up.

Have you tried the Vitamin store? I don't know if they have it or not. I don't have any of those near me. Closest is 1 hr away, but my little health food store is great. She even ordered me some chewable Iron to try!

See if you have a little local shop somewhere.

I don't have the chewable type - but I wanted to let you know I have not noticed that it has helped.

My hair is falling out at a very rapid rate......

My hair didn't fall out until about 5 -6 months after surgery, and then WOW it was falling out in clumps. My hair got really thin. I immediately started taking the Biotin. It slowed down and stopped, but wasn't growing back. My hair was still wispy and thin. Then at about 14 months out it started growing back. I had a "halo" of hair sticking straight out of my head. I didn't care. I was delighted. Well, I'm almost 19 months out, and it started falling out AGAIN. I'm so disgusted. I haven't recovered from the first time!!! I never stopped taking the Biotin. I suspect that it could be my thyroid. I may need to have my meds adjusted. I noticed that my sleeping is not as good, I have nightmares, which is totally out of character, I'm getting little rashes on my skin, my bowels are irritable and I have constant gas, I'm more prone to depression and temper tantrums and I can't seem to regulate my body temp. I'm burning up one minute (not sweating, just dry burning hot skin) and shivering the next. So It's time for more blood work....... Bummer.

I haven't tried Biotin, but I have heard that not getting enough Protein can contribute to Hair loss. Are you making sure to get the required (or more) grams of protein? It may not be just a biotin deficiency. I drink a Protein Shake pretty much daily that has 35g so I get a jump on my requirements. I would say my hair maybe got a little bit thinner, but never fell out. My sister had gastric bypass a couple years before my band, and her hair got really thin, but after a while it grew back. I would seriously look at how much protein you are taking in. The shakes I get are called Worldwide Pure Protein Shakes, and the widest range of flavors is available at the Vitamin Shoppe. You can shop online too at vitaminshoppe.com. They may have the biotin you are looking for, too. The shakes are $2.79 individually, but if you buy a 12 pack case, that costs $27.99, or about $2.33 each. You can also sign up for reward points and you will periodically get coupons to use online or in the stores. I had to spend a little over $100 to do this, but I had a coupon for $20 off a purchas of $100 or more, and shipping is free for orders over $99. So I ordered enough so that after I took off the $20 the order was still over $99 so I also got free shipping. Didn't have to lug them home from the store, and the dollars off just about paid for an entire 12 pack. Now that is saving! So if the biotin isn't doing it for you, take a look at your protein consumption.

I want to reiterate again that Biotin will not help you KEEP your hair. It will only help you GROW more!

I was losing hair and getting plenty of Protein so that theory doesn't hold true for everyone. Mine literally stopped falling out when I added veggies and fruit back in to my diet. Once I did that, all was good. So for ME it wasn't Protein, it was other Vitamins and minerals from fresh veggies and the little fruit that I do eat.

Make sure you're eating a balanced diet along with that protein.

I use Nature's Way Biotin from vitacost.com. It's a lozenge not a chewable. I haven't found any chewable Biotin around.

hair loss may be dur to poor nutrition - often not enough Protein or an Iron deficiency, so it it important to eat a balanced diet.

Since our portion sizes are limited, it is important to be sure to get enough supplements in. I have been comparing the ingredients of various chewable multi Vitamins and alternates, and by far, GNC's Women's Ultra Mega Formula seems to meet the highest % of vitamin/minerals daily requirement (100% Biotin); unfortunately, no Iron. Its a powder, so you can add it to you Protein shake. They also have a version for men.

It's funny, someone on another commented that she chose the Lap Band over other surgeries because she "wanted to keep her hair and teeth"!

Looks like she didn't do her research, because Hair loss can occur with ALL the WL Surgeries!

It's not simply Biotin that will make the difference in hair loss/no hair loss. It's a combination. Biotin is important, but so is Inositol, Choline, and many others. Protein is VERY important, because that is basically what hair IS.

Make sure you have a good diet, and take a very good multi as well. In my case, having a Bypass, hair loss was potentially MORE of an issue than it is with the Band. I found some products by a company called Bariatric Building Blocks that seem to be very, very good. I have not had a single issue with hair loss, and I attribute that to these Vitamins. The cool thing is that they make these chewables that are simply WONDERFUL tasting!....I look forward to taking them every day!

Keep in mind though.....the hair loss is almost always a temporary thing....it'll grow back, don't worry about that by itself. Concentrate on getting all the nutrients for your ENTIRE body, and the hair will take care of itself!!

Hair's to you! (sorry...)

I spoke with my doctor about this last week. She said it usually begins at 3mo, peaks at 6mo, and ceases at 9mo. She recommended Biotin but also making sure you have enough Protein, zinc, and Iron.< /p>

I have thick hair, but I'm losing heaps. Although outsiders can't tell....I CAN!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
