Pre-Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

I start my 2 weeks on July 2nd :-). Two Protein shakes a day and a meal of protein/veggie. Also allows s/f Jello, popcicles, s/f non carbonated drinks etc.

Oddest thing for me, since I had my Dr consult, I've lost interest in food. I mean I've had some 'goodbye' foods, and they just weren't worth it. I'm looking forward to the pre-op diet part.

Gitrdone,

Your pre-op sounds just like mine. And I've noticed the same thing. I've eaten a couple things that used to be my favorites, but now it's like EWWW!

I figured it was from having my gallbladder out, but it's probably also a result of having so much less sugar/carbs in my body, too.

Good luck to you!

My pre-op diet is very strict. Jello (no red), coffee, crystal light, Water, skim milk, broths, 4 Protein Shakes AND THAT'S IT!:) But I am trying to do it without cheating, wish me luck  The good thing is I only have to do it for 7 days!!!

Well, I started my pre-op diet today.

Unlimited Items:

S/F Jello, popsicles

Zero calorie beverages

broth Soups

Limited Items:

Regular Jello or Popsicles (3 per day)

100% fruit juice, Gatorade, or Powerade (16 oz. per day)

Skim Milk (three cups)

High Protein, Low Carb supplements (1-2 per day)

So far today hasn't been too bad. I'm at the beach on vacation (leaving tomorrow), and it's so hot I don't really want to eat anyway. However, I know that the seven hour drive home tomorrow will be hard because I will want to snack in the car. I will just have to drink, drink, drink, and stop to pee, pee, pee!:)

If we could all stay on the pre-op diet we wouldn't need the band!LOL

I for one don't crave large amounts of food while on the pre-op but I do find myself watching my family eat and asking them if it is good. They have been asking for dinner and I have told them they can have a Protein Drink if they want LOL. I have adult children living at home who have always been used to me cooking for them! Whatever they want they got. I am a damn good cook and I love food so meals have always been a delight! I hope that once banded I don't feel the temptation as strongly as I do now. I will definately miss having an occasional beer! But it will be worth it to not have this HUGE belly!

Surgery is on the 2nd of July - wish me luck, I am wishing all of you a smooth road to being skinny without setbacks!

I wish you luck because I'm being done on the 2nd too. I too am a good cook and really enjoy cooking and creating in the kitchen and it is going to be quite a challenge to learn how to tone down both the types of food and quantities so I don't have tons of left-overs (my husband rarely eats LO's).

I've been on the pre-op diet since 6-20 and I've lost 5 pounds. I'm also lite headed and hungry all the time, but I've been coping. I have Protein drink for Breakfast and lunch and all the green stuff (as in salad) I want plus the s/f Jello, etc. It allows for a couple of diet drinks, but I don't drink those now and I really don't want to start. I do drink Electro-Mix which is a power and does what Gatorade does only there's no sugar. Electro-Mix uses stevia as a sweetner. dinner is lean cuisine, but I can't stand that either, so I'm eating very lean and small potions of meat and veggies.

I feel better already and I'm amazed at how 11 pounds makes a difference (6 lbs lost before offical pre-op). I have 2 more pounds to go before July 2nd and am confident I will be there before then.

I started my preop diet today, which consists of no more than 130 to 150 carbs per day, 50 to 60 grams of Protein and this is done with mainly fluids. I can have unlimited SF Kool-Aid, Diet Snapple, Diet sodas, sf popsicles, SF Jello, broths and Soups (strained).

I have a headache right now and I feel just a little shaky, but I will prevail. :)) How is everyone else doing so far?

When I get a headache if I drink Water and drink another Protein shake, it seems to help. I have had low concentration and have not been very patient :smile2: with my family. I will have sudden intense cravings but they will go away fairly quickly.

I don't see how people can do the liquid diet without the motivation of "getting the band." It is extremely difficult! but I am doing it

Slpcat,

How many days are you in? This is my second day. Feeling a little better. I took two Tylenol last night when I had my headache. It got rid of it. Oddly, I just cooked some dinner for my hubby and son and I did rather well. You are definitely right though, about having the band as motivation; otherwise,I would never make it through. It's helping me though to just go a day at a time and not think about the rest of the week and how much longer I have to go. I will say though, almost 2 down and 8 more to go lol :smile2: I also feel if I can make it through this and the following few weeks after the band, I can pretty much handle anything else that comes my way. We will be successful!!

This is my 3rd day and things were a little better. I found crystal light raspberry green tea today and it was YUMMY! That helped me today. I am sick of Protein shakes though. I wonder if I bought unflavored Protein powder and added it to chicken broth if that would be the same as Protein Shakes?? probably not because it doesn't have the Vitamins. I've just never been a smoothy kinda person, oh well. I am ready for post-op and hopefully these hunger pains will cease for a while!

I'm starting my pre-op diet today. My surgery is a week from today, so it's not too bad.

I say that now, lmao. I'm already so hungry and it's only noon! :bored:

I have a low-carb, liquid diet. The most non-liquid I can get is yogurt, Jello, and cottage cheese.

I could really go for some Soup right now, but I don't have any available to me.

I used to make a cream of mushroom Soup using cottage cheese pureed in the blender, with chicken broth and seasonings and then cut up cooked mushrooms into it and heat it through. I can't remember the proportions but you could play with it a little. And just add your cooked mushrooms to the mixture in the blender so that it meets the liquid requirement?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
