Question About the Breathing Tube

Recommended Posts

My surgery is this Thursday (June 18). I met with the anesthesiologist at the beginning of June. She said that there is a small possibility that they will need to insert the breathing tube before I am completely out. She said something about having the breathing tube inserted when I'm halfway sedated or something, because of the size of my throat (I think). Has anyone had the breathing tube put in before the anesthesia was administered (or before it was completely effective)? If you did, what was the experience? I am completely scared about it. Any comments or reassurance would be great. Thanks!

I didnt think it was possible to do it while you were awake, even half awake....Can't be, your gag reflex would kick in...Good Luck with the surgery!

That rarely happens (I'm a former surgical nurse). It is possible but hardly ever happens. If they did insert before you were completely under your throat would be anesthetized (deadened) to take away your gag reflex and it would only take a few seconds. But, most of the time you are well under before the endotrachael tube is inserted. You may be awake somewhat when they remove it, but you are just asked to cough and then they pull............very very fast.

Don't let it keep you up at night. I think you will b fine!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
