Carbonated Beverages

Recommended Posts

Was banded 7 weeks ago today. If there is anything I miss it is

DIET COKES. I have took a sip or two now and then with no ill effects

I am not a coffee drinker in the am, have either gone with out or tried to get some hot tea down, or even ice tea

so are diet drinks or carbonated beverages a TOTAL NO NO??

Sues, try those little tubey things that you put in a 20 oz bottle of Water. Walmart's fruit Punch and Orange flavored are out of this world good. (at least to me) From what I can understand you have have suger free hot chocolate..that might be something to try in the morning. I am not banded yet, but will on the 23rd. Diet V8 Splash is also really good, the Tropical flavor. I have been experimenting trying to find the things I can deal with post-band. I too am going to have a hard time stepping away from the diet cherry vanilla dr pepper. *sigh*

Hi Sues05,

I was banded on 7/27 and started drining diet coke again after week six (Healing period over). My doctor never said I couldn't once I was done healing.

I'm the same way, I have the diet coke for my morning coffee. I am not having problems at all. Of course, I do notice I don't drink as much and I don't attempt to eat either before or after, but only because I am usually hearing the "gurgle" and don't feel hungry.

Hope this helps.

Karen

My doc tells me that I can have diet coke "in a couple of months" I too have had a few sips, it foams soo much in my mouth, I cant imagine what it would be doing to my stomach??? I do have a Dr friend who was banded 3/05 and she sips diet sodas every day and is doing great, almost to goal already!

I'm the same as jack - cant bear artificially sweetened things and have never ever been a soft drink drinker (dont you know drinking calories makes you fat, lol).

But ask me to give up coffee? No way!

My surgeon is clear that sodas are a SCURGE on society! He feels it is one of the main contributors of obesity. Yikes...

He told me preliminary studies have shown that even diet sodas are triggers to bad eating or even sweet eating. He wants me to avoid them like the plague.

Although, I have heard other doctors give the "ok" for diet sodas, as long as the carbonation was released (flattened).

I wasn't a huge fan, but I did enjoy an occasional soda, when we go out to dinner. I do find that they are triggers for me.

My doc says NO NO NO to carbonation. I heed the warning. Haven't even tried them.

We have the same Dr. and I have taken heed in the warning also, have not had any nor do I miss them, it's not worth any risk of losing my band or damaging my pouch

My doc says I can have caronation after I am 4 weeks out, but I am going to try to get off of it. I say if you need a diet coke after you're healed have one but just try not to drink like 5 a day! Pre-surgery I cut down to 1/2 a diet soda a day.

Having been a hard core diet pepsi drinker for 25 years, I didn't think I'd ever be able to part with them, but I did. Had my last one a week before surgery, and haven't even craved one since. It's my caffienated coffee I miss most :(

The dietician told me that while the carbonation can swell the pouch, the main reason my doctor said "No soda" is because it could "possibly" erode the band eventually.

I may sip a little here and there later on, but so far, I haven't missed it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
