Transitioning to Solid Food

Recommended Posts

My doctor's office originally gave me instructions to do 1 week clear liquid, 3 weeks full liquid, 2 weeks mushies then to transition to solid food. At my 1 week post op appt. the doctor told me to do 10 days full liquid then 10 days mushies which cut about 2 weeks off the post op diet for me. Since they originally drilled it into me that if I ate before 6 weeks, I may cause damage, I'm somewhat nervous to start solid food now. My question is: When you all went to solids...did you go right into solid food the first day you could or did you slowly introduce different solids each day?

LOL...

I was ravenous the day after my op and so dumped the Soup I'd been told to eat for the 1st week and moved onto mushies....

9 days post op I'm still on mushies and will prob stay on them another week... then I'll move onto mashed food - rather than pureed for a week - then soft solid food.

Although I get full quickly now, I had no probs with PB's or gas or anything else... like markymark, I forget I have the band sometimes!!

I'm 13 days post-op and doing fine also. No nausea, gas, etc. I try to eat slow and chew really well. I'm having to practice doing both since I didn't do that before I was banded. Ready for my first fill!!

I used a book that I found on weight loss surgery and it suggested adding a new food or two each day until you are 30 days out. That way if you have any reactions/issues you will know for sure what caused the issue. So far no problems, the last thing they advise adding is beef, steak, corn, asparagus, celery and carrot, as they are all hard to digest so I started with very moist cooked chicken, soft veggies that could be somewhat smashed, very soft fruit... I have not added grains yet, rice, breads, but have added a small amount of well cooked Pasta with no problems. Go slow, and your body will tell you when you have an issue. Good luck.

I wondered about the shakes. But can't you drink something to help?

I get low blood sugar shakes and worry about that during the first week or so but I hoped that once I got past the Clear liquids days I'd be able to drink something like a slim fast to help me out.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
