I want to pick up some rollerblades to start rollerblading instead of walking. Will this be good enough exercise to start off, until I feel I am ready to start running? Anybody else rollerblade?

OK, no one responded, but let me tell you! I got the rollerblades and loaded my two toddlers in a double stroller and it is one heck of a workout. Thirty minutes and my face was beat red, heart rate was 162, and I was sweating like a pig. Not to mention it's fun and the kids loved it!

I don't rollerblade but I intend to take up roller skating again when I lose a bunch of weight and get my balance back. I used to skate a lot in the late 70s-early 80s and it was great exercise. You're moving, but it's lower impact than running. I'm going to show my 16-year-old how we did it back in the disco era.

Sounds like you had a great time!

I lost 75 lbs rollerblading before surgery, then got pregnant and gained it all back. I think roller skating and rollerblading are the best ways to work out if you can find a good place with a smooth surface. If you go to calorieking.com there is a section you can put in your weight, age, how long you work out. It will then give you a LONG list of thing to burn calories and rollerblading is one of the top ways. 30 minutes of rollerblading at 250 lbs I would burn 526 calories.

I love the idea of using the stroller with the kids in conjunction with the roller blades. It may help with the occasional unsteadiness.

In the past I have gotten slightly used roller blades at the thrift store for like $8 if you don't want to sink a bunch of money in.

Good luck.

I do daycare so I love this idea.

Take it from someone who used to do it all the time~ wrist guards, elbow guards and knee pads are your friends~:scared2:

Find your local parks out to see if they have any paved bike trails. Those are the BEST for rollerblading.
