Just wanted to say hello. I've been on here for about a month but this is my first post. I attended the seminar today and have decided to do the band. My insurance will not cover this so I will be self pay. For those who were self pay, did you have to do the psychiatric consult and about how long did it take to schedule your surgery? I was told to call Monday and set up my consultation with the surgeon.

I don't plan on telling anyone other than DH and my children so I'm hoping to meet some friends here to share this journey with.

Welcome Jeff and good luck.

I was self pay. But all Dr.s have their own policies. i didn't have to have any type of pre test except for blood work. I was asked a bunch of questions. I am sure if I snored I would have probably had to have a sleep apnea test done. I talked to my Dr. 1 day and was scheduled for surgery 2 weeks later! I have been banded for over a yr. I love my band. Make sure you have all your research done and research your Dr. I went to a seminar of my Dr.Found out at the seminar he had it done also. I feel so comfortable with him. I can ask him anything cause he's been though it too.

Read a lot of these post. they will help you understand the band. Especially the people who have posted a lot. This will help you with questions for you Dr.

Keep us posted please.

Welcome, too, and congrats on taking that first step!

I'm a self-pay, too. The only pre-op tests I needed were blood work, and Upper GI, EKG and ... hmm. something else, but I can't think right now?

I do know it wasn't a psych test!

Fortunately, since I don't have all sorts of insurance hoops to jump through, my surgery was scheduled fairly quickly. For which I am incredibly thankful!

I don't think I could have emotionally handled a long, drawn out process! When I make my mind up to do something, I want to do it and get it over with!

Top Tier,

Thanks for the well wishes! How long is your pre-op diet? Is it all liquids?

Called for my consult appointment, first time I called was given an appointment at the end of July, ugh, called back to check the schedule of the other surgeon in the office and he is squeezing me in on Mon., June 22!:bored:

That was killing me to think I had to wait a month just for the consult. I too am very impatient. Actuall I looked into doing this a few years ago but my ins. would not cover it and at the time couldn't self pay. Now is the time!

Will be praying for you next week. Keep us posted on your progress.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
