Help -11 days for my lap and on liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I have only 11 days to go for my surgery. The nutrisionist just put me on a Glucerna drink only diet until the 24th (surgery day). She said that I may never ever drink sodas again, since it afected the band. Has anyone heard of this before or of any other "eternal" restrictions?

Yea, sorry to tell you that most Dr.'s (but not all) say no more soda's. I for one have tried to drink one and was in a lot of pain because of it. It is because of the carbonation.(sp) But I have heard of bandsters who can still drink the beloved drink! It just depends on you! Good luck and if you try it, try it S L O W L Y!!

The only other restriction for me is bread. Toast is fine but NO BREAD!! Oh yea, and cake. I CAN'T DO CAKES!! IT HURTS!! But I guess that's a good thing! ;)

I was also told no soda for eternity. Some docs believe that it stretches out the pouch. I've also heard lots of people say it's really painful when they try it. It hasn't been that hard for me, but I never drank much pop anyways. However, lots of people still drink pop. Probably just depends on whether or not you can tolerate it.

Any other eternal bans will be dependant on your own experience. The bread/cake problem that Coyotegirl mentioned is really common. I've only been banded 7 weeks (1 fill a week ago) and I haven't had problems with either. That may change down the road.

Good luck, and don't worry - The sacrifices will be worth it!

I guess not being able to drink pop or eat cake and bread is a good thing, it's not good for you anyway. I'ts part of my new way of life. I can't belive it's next week, I can't wait but at the same time I can. Thanks for the support!!!

Jack2109, how are you holding up with the liquid diet? I'm starting low carb this week so I can try to lose as much as possible before my surgery on Oct 10.

I am a diet soda drinker, but have faithfully committed to consuming as much Water as I can on a daily basis.

I have heard of many bandsters that have luck with letting the soda sit for a while before consuming, to lose the carbonation. Try to re-introduce all things (foods, drinks, etc) slowly, one item a day. This way you'll be able to pinpoint which things are an issue for you. For instance, if you try Beans and rice on the same day and have trouble - you won't necessarily know which one is causing the problem.

All the best with your surgery, keep us updated.

I guess as everyone has said.. "Every Doctor is different". I am a huge diet soda drinker as well. I asked my Dr. & the nutritionist about the No No of never drinking soda again & I was actually surprised at the answer. I was told that for the first 18-24 months soda is not allowed for a few reasons & one of them was because the first 18-24 months after surgery are the most important for weight loss, this is the time when you will most likely lose the most amount of weight. With the carbonation, you can feel bloated or full and it could come back up on you and at the same time it could stretch your pouch (the Dr. said it's not a proven fact, as of yet). The Nutritionist stated that "IF" my body allowed me to have the soda that I should keep it to a max. of 1 a day and try to stir the bubbles out as much as possible. She would not recommend it to me, but she has had many patients that have had soda without incident. The Dr. said that the best answers of how it feels and what it can do would come from the people who are already banded. He said to listen to their experiences. Some may have an issue and some may not. His thoughts were that he can almost guarantee me that the ones who had the most problems were the one under 2 years with the band.

Like I said, every doctor is different. I'm not saying mine is right at all. I just wish there were one set of guide lines/rules. I guess the true answer to this question will come after research is done. We'll see if erosion occurs, if it really does stretch the pouch and so on.

Just my 2 cents

My surgeon told me that you should not have soda b/c the carbonation can get trapped and the trapped gas can cause abdominal distention and that can cause cardiac arrythmias! I wouldnt take a chance, boy I am going to miss my diet coke

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
