I honestly don't know. I don't think so. I didn't have one. I suppose a surgeon "could" require it but they are invasive and for a short surgery (esp if you are NPO as ordered) then there isn't much need for it.

My surgeon said yes. They put it in after i was knocked out and it was out before i woke up..didn't even know it was there...he said if you urinate during surgery it makes the table 'unsterille' and that's not the goal..

I had one in after I was under anesthesia and it stayed in until the next day. That was fine with me. I sure didn't want to use a bedpan in recovery and I didn't feel like getting up later that day, either. So, I'm glad I had one.

As far as I know I didn't have one. Put it this way i had my own knickers on when I went into surgery and still had them on when I woke up !

I have had catheters before and they have all been taken out when I was awake a couple of hours after surgery.

I also had no problem getting up after surgery to use the bathroom.

I don't know about Lap Band surgery, but I had a Lap choley and didn't have one. It's not that long of a surgery... and as a nurse, I can't see why they would want to place one since it's a risk for infection... but I suppose it's the doc's preference...

Ok, so I was told that they were going to put on in so I did not go pee before surgery..... Well obviously they did not because the first words out of my mouth was "my beds all wet"

Yep, I peed like a little puppy  must have been when they threw those warm blankets on me as I heard someone counting in the background. Good to know that those microwaves in the surgical room were not for surgeons to warm up their hot pockets!

for some reason I was really nervous about the prospect of having to get one, but I never gotone during the surgery. I did have trouble urinating after surgery though. I think it was because it hurt my stomach so bad. I asked later and the doc said he doesnt feel the need to use them.

MissD...I think you're right...it's up to the doc. I confirmed I didn't have one for any of mine; I had urinated all I could prior to surgery and they wanted me to be able to go as soon afterward as possible...

and yes it is a big risk for infection! :tongue_smilie:

I don't think it is necessary but they sometimes do it alot. I've never had one (thank god) and they always ask if I need to pee before surgery which even if I don't I go anyway. I don't mean for this to sound offensive so no one take it that way but I think maybe the older you get maybe the more they think about doing it.

maybe in Australia? but I was 53 when I had my TWO surgeries and not cathed either time. It really is mostly dependent on the surgeon and his/her preference. For a short surgery (as most lap band "installations" are) it isn't required.

LOL I'm of the "never trust anyone over 30" generation...oops blew by that one long ago. I think of old as generally about 30 years "more" than whatever age I am at the time! :tongue_smilie:

I had one (ughhhh) and it gave me a bladder infection!

P.S. "old" is ten years older than you are. So, yeah, 31 is old (for me, at least) :-)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
