Yes, you are healing. Most of us are very hungry through the post op diet, at least until we get mushies. Just hang in there! For me, that was the worst part; but it's important you follow your post op diet to allow your surgical sites to heal and your band and stomach to settle in together. You can do it!

Julie,

Are you getting enough Protein? Even post-op surgeons usually like you get get in 60 grams (obviously this would be done through Protein Shakes or something else in liquid form). In my pre-op diet, I've found that when I drink my protein, I feel substantially better and little hunger.

Best of luck!

Lauren87...my doc specifically forbade Protein during the first week and there is a group here in town who say no protein for a month! So...we're all safest if we just follow our docs orders. I would've KILLED for one of those nasty Protein Shakes during the first week sigh but it was not to be!

RestlessMonkey:

Wow, I'm really surprised to hear that! Obviously follow what your surgeon recommends as they're all different. Thanks for adding that into the thread, I have never heard of that.

Lauren87 !!

With the different "RULES" out there for each surgeon, it's a wonder we all end up in the same place (smaller!) LOL

BUT yes we all need to pick a surgeon and then follow his/her rules. Question authority!!! but don't take anecdotal "proof" on this chat board as evidence that you should contradict your surgeon's directions.

Yes, but RestlessMonkey, keep in mind that they've also made some significant changes over time with this surgery.

I know that my niece used the same surgeon I have. She was told the same as you, no Protein. Her surgery was in late 2008. I think either late October or early November.

They (the doctor's office) has significantly changed the pre- and post-op diets since then, based on a variety of things.

So now we do get to have the protein in the second week. She didn't get it for almost 4 weeks! Yikes!

Plus, on her pre-op, she was not allowed anything BUT liquids. We are allowed raw veggies, cottage cheese and Tomato Soup (which she wasn't).

Same doctor; just different timing, I guess!

BUT!! Having said that, you are absolutely correct! Whatever one's OWN doctor says to do and not do is what one should follow -- to the T.

That's my point exactly; one can only assume the chosen surgeon stays current on the science and adjusts his/her practice as circumstances warrant. For example while I was going through the preop phase my surgeon adjusted the time he wanted us to wait to have liquids...from 1 hour post meal to 15 minutes.

But his preop diet hasn't changed (I got another copy of it a month ago)

Do what your doc tells you, essentially. If you don't trust your doc, get another. If you trust him/her but just "wonder"...ask their rationale. They are the pros, not we.

Too funny, RestlessMonkey!

My doctor changed his timing on liquids after eating, too, but the OTHER direction!

Now he says, 1 hour is great, but 2 hours is even better to wait!

I still say that's going to be very hard for me to do!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
