sdeale0928 0 Posted June 13, 2009 I was banded on April 10th, down 26 pounds. I was told today by me hairdresser that my hair is falling out at an alarming rate. She suggested I see my doctor about my thyroid, but I know it is the lapband. ANyone dealt with this? How did you stop it? Any suggestions on Vitamins? I would appreicate any and all input. This was the issue I feared the most with the procedure. Thanks!
mljalways 1 Posted June 13, 2009 I have seen many posts about this and they are all conflicting. I have lost an abundance of hair but I also see new growth so I am riding it out.
Shay7997 0 Posted June 13, 2009 The nutritionist told me this can happen with lack of Protein.< /p>
jlray 0 Posted June 13, 2009 I'm going through this, too. I think it's the Protein. But I do take a Protein Shake daily, and eat Proteins first so I dunno. My Hair loss has started to slow however, and I still have plenty left, though not as much as before. It's scary when I shower to see all the hair that comes out when I Shampoo.< /p>

This was the issue I feared the most with the procedure. Thanks! It is due to lack of Protein. I eat/drink around 90 grams of Protein a day with 64 oz of Water. This not only helps with your Hair loss but helps with hunger. Protein helps you from being hungry. Good luck and I hope this helps! Carrie
lotzasunshine 2 Posted June 13, 2009 I started taking Biotin and it helped with my Hair loss, and my nails. those would just peel apart.
lindas0809 0 Posted June 13, 2009 It's Protein loss, some banders get it but almost all RNY patients lose hair. I have several friends that have had bypass and swear by Biotin.< /p>
jms462001 9 Posted June 15, 2009 I was sure it would happen as so many said it was inevitable no matter what we did, but I am 7 months out and so far have not noticed anything significant. I would definitely notice because my hair is fine and thin. I try to get in the required Protein daily, use the sublingual B12 with b-6, folic acid & Biotin and I use the Biotin Shampoo, conditioner and gel. I don't know if these things helped or if I was just lucky so far.
Fae 0 Posted June 15, 2009 Around 7 or 8 months out, I noticed more and more hair falling out. Then around the 9th month, it stopped. Now before the band, I had thick curly hair. Now it is much thinner and if I use a straightener, my hair looks like it never had curl at all. The whole texture of my hair changed, but I did not become balled. I think you just need to wait it out. My surgeon says your body does through a shock a few months out after surgery, then returns to normal. It seems that is what mine did. I also take Biotin and a lot of different Vitamin chewables as well. Getting in your Protein helps too.
GreenEyedLady 0 Posted June 15, 2009 I, too, have spoken to both my surgeon and hairdresser--both say the Hair loss is due to the fact that the wt. loss is such a shock to our systems. And both say it is temporary! Yeah!! I have never eaten so much Protein in my life as I do since having surgery 3mos ago nor have I lost as much hair as I have since surgery. I've seen banders on here say they have tried every lotion and potion and Vitamin, etc. and still lost their hair. But again, it was temporary and it all came back. Guess we just have to ride it out.
