My experience with Cigna and Dr Barkers Office

Recommended Posts

On June 2nd 2009, i completed my 6mo supervised diet with psych evaluation and EVERYTHING else Cigna required.

Dale, with Dr. Wade Barkers office sent out my paperwork on Wednesday June 3rd.Well....On Monday June 7th, I called Dr. Barkers office just to make sure that the paperwork was sent off and everything was in order. Steve(the other insurance guy) said that my paperwork was returned from Cigna saying that i was not covered and that i needed to get with my HR dept at work. I was so pissed but we discovered that someone put the wrong medical ID number from my insurance card on the paperwork. Actually i was told they didnt have a card at the time of making my file so a number was put in and someone was to go back and fix it when they received my card. Dr. Barkers office is way too busy and your file does go through too many peoples hands and no one can really keep up. it was really a chaotic experience for me. anyway, Steve said that he would resend the paperwork that day, which he did. I'm furious now because i have spent all week, literally everyday calling cigna to make sure that the paperwork was received. I didnt want an answer on approval or denial, i just wanted to make sure it was in someones hands. Everyone including supervisors said the paperwork was never received!Nothing showing a fax was ever sent :thumbup:....i called dr barkers office to let steve know what was going on, steve said "well they're lying and it was sent and that i just needed to sit and wait. which is what im doing now. Im so angry and i dont know what to do. Im not getting help from either side. I feel i wasted my time. Even though i heard all the horror stories regarding Cigna, i never thought this would happen to me.

So sorry to hear that! I had an issue with my physicians office too and thought my surgery hopes had ended but it all worked out. Keep the faith

I have Cigna and after it was submitted they claimed to not have it either. I had to wait 3 weeks before they said they received it. The DR office only submitted once. So they had it the whole time. It took me 6 weeks after that to get an answer. At the same time there was someone else on her that submitted after me and got an answer in a week. I was pissed. But that Cigna for you.. Good Luck!!!

I think the most important question is, are you happy with Dr Barker himself? If you really like him and trust him, then I would wait it out with them. If you don't really like him that much, I would change surgeons now. There are lots of surgeons in the DFW area that will do a great job for you. I've personally been waiting for 3 years, so I don't think I would get upset over a couple of weeks, but that's just me. Good luck and keep us posted on how things are going.

Joan

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
