Messed Up BIIGGG TIME!!! Help!!

Recommended Posts

My surgery was 06/03 and the first couple of days i didn’t have much of an appetite but as the week progressed i acquired the want for mashed potatoes (which my nutrients said was fine) than it grew to wanted some cheese in them.. Which I THOUGHT was also fine. I really wish that was the worst part, 2 days ago i grew weak an went to chickfila I ate 5 chicken nuggets and a couple of fries.. of course i felt full very quickly as well as a lil ill, do you think i messed up anything internally? I have been slightly constipated since, but i took some benefiber (which was suggested by my doctor for the 2nd week of the liquid diet) and i feel fine. My stomach is a lil swollen, but it has been like that since the surgery. I also think i messed up AGAIN today by eating broccoli and cheese Soup, which i read today in my post op diet book (after the fact) isn’t good for me either. I did SO WELL on my pre- op diet, i just feel horrible. i was TRUELY dedicated to this 6 months prior.. I feel like an idiot.. Am i totally screwed.. I go into see my doctor Wed. (6/17)

On a lighter note.. I am down 30lbs!!

I haven't been banded yet (my surgery is June 18th), but I don't think you completely messed up. I mean, a week out is probably not the best time to eat foods like chicken nuggets and fries (just because you are healing), esp. if you ate them fast. You should go see your doc just to make sure nothing got stuck/slipped/etc. but if you are feeling fine then there is probably a good chance that you are fine (however, the only person who can tell you for sure is your doc). Just take it as a learning experience and keep on going with the prescribed post-op eating plan that you discussed with your doctor.

Congrats on the 30 pounds! Use it as motivation to continuing working with you band and to stick with your eating plan!

I think you need to call your doc. My doc was quite explicit about what we were to eat, and when...stressing slipping or worse could occur if we cheated. All docs are slightly different; only your doctor can decide if you need tests to see if you've damaged yourself or not.

I was banded on May 15th. Post op i went from liquids to mushies within a few days and then on to regular foods, eventhough i was supposed to stay on liqiuds for 2 weeks post op and then mushies for 2 weeks. I had the same concerns as you do. I was told (on this forum) that you dont actually start to feel any real restriction until after you have been fillled. I had my first fill on June 11th and noticed the difference straight away. I HAVE to take smaller bites and chew for longer before swallowing or else i get pain and vomiting. Anyway, things are still going ok for me even after not following the post op diet to scratch. However, i'm in no way saying that what i done was right. Good luck!

Unfortunately the problem isn't restriction; it's that when we digest food (peristalsis) our stomach moves/churns. We don't feel it but it does happen. That movement occuring before we're healed can cause the sutures holding the band in place to slip or give way; setting one up for a slip NOW or LATER. That's why I suggest telling your doc; odds are you're ok but what if you aren't? Better to catch and fix it now than to have a slip or erosion down the road and wonder "Why me?".

Yes, you might know in 12 months whether you messed up or not. If you disrupt the healing process, and your band doesnt heal in place correctly, you can set yourself up for slips further down the track.

OMG I am in the same boat as you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I was banded on may 26th and I ate potato Soup on day 2, and mashed potatoes on day three etc. I am three weeks out and can and do eat anything, just not big portions. I was on vacation last week and ate half a cheeseburger. I think I probably screwed everything up, but I am super hungry all the time!!! I have read that this is a limbo stage that sucks until you get the first fill. I am praying that I did not cause myself major damage. I am trying to be on my shakes now that I am home. Good Luck............

chargerfan...you can't unring the bell, as it were....

please tell your doc what you ate and when so that he can either tell you it's ok or do some tests to see if you're allright. It's not like a DIET where you can starve and catch up; the point is while you were supposed to be healing you were eating and digesting. let your doc tell you it's ok (or no)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
