Banded 05/01/09, conceived 05/31/09

Recommended Posts

Ok. Well I'm very new to the lap band and was (am) scheduled for my second fill on Monday, June 15th. I just found out today that I am pregnant. (We have been trying and are SO excited). I guess losing those 18.5 lbs really did work after all. Although I didn't believe them when they told me it could.

My question is, what's the likelyhood of my doctor pulling all the Fluid out of my band when I go in on Monday. I would really like to lose some additional weight before I start gaining it back. I am super scared to gain a ton of weight will I'm pregnant even though I know they can put the fluid back and I will eventually lose the weight again. Its really the thought of having to lose the same weight twice that gets me.

Any suggestions on what I should or should not be doing would be great. This is my first pregnance.

I don't know that you should have been TTC that close to surgery, but what's done is done. This may bum you out a bit, but the general consensus is that NO WEIGHT LOSS can occur during pregnancy. Even in the grossly obese, my OBGYN said that doctors strictly tell patients not to attempt or pursue weight loss. Maintaining weight is usually ok, or only gaining a little, but your plans to lose may have to be on hold for 40 weeks or so...

Depending on how hormones and a growing baby put pressure on your band, you may get a complete unfill. I kept my entire fill and have about 4 wks to go, I've had a few sliming and vomiting episodes here and there on my tighter days, but mostly I feel great. However I have gained weight, I'd say 25-30 lbs by now...so that sucks, but I'll live.

Good luck and try to keep your fill, just don't diet. Weight and cholesterol drops during the early weeks of pregnancy are linked to spina bifida and a higher rate of childhood cancers.

I was told before I had my band that losing weight while pregnant is okay. As long as you aren't going to extreme to lose it. As long as you and the baby are healthy losing is just fine! My doctor told me to wait at least a year after banding to try to get preggo! Some say even a year! I agree that you probably shouldn't have been trying or you shouldn't have gotten banded until you got preggo and had a baby, but it's done and I'm sure you're excited!

I think when you're heavy that losing some weight during pregnancy is not unhealthy. How COULD it be unhealthy? The baby will get what it needs.

I've read mixed reviews from good sources for both arguements. I would say that you should use common sense. Make sure the calories you do consume are very healthy and take the prenatal Vitamins.

Maybe you can lose 10-15 before the third trimester and then be at a zero sum gain by the time you deliver.

I was always told that if you're over weight when you become pregnant that it is okay to lose during the pregnancy as long as the baby is getting what he/she needs!

Hello all, just wanted to give an update. My doctor actually released me after my post op visit to try to conceive, after all this is the reason I had the surgery. I did see my surgeon and he gave me 1 cc of Fluid and said congrats, I will see you after the baby is born. I spoke with my OB and she if fine with the Fluid level and just asked me to eat as many of the 1800 calories required a day. I am eating several small meals a day and have only gained 2 lbs. Both surgeon and OB are happy as well as I am.

thanks for all your advice.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
