Hair Loss

Recommended Posts

I'm about 4 months post op, and for several weeks now i've noticed some major Hair loss going on. I've always been borderline anemic, but after the op, my doc my Iron levels plumetted. i've been taking some iron supplements, and while that's helped with the fatigue and pasty skin, the hair loss is still going on. what the heck do i do now?

i've always enjoyed having thick healthy hair (actually it's been the only physical trait i've always loved about myself). i'd really hate to end up with limp listless hair because of this band. anybody have any successful remedies?

I noticed a lot of hair falling about 4 months out - lasted for a couple of months. Like you, I am lucky that I have really thick hair. I started taking Biotin and not sure if it helped with the hair falling out, but it did seem to make my hair healthier. I'm back to normal now. Eating right and drinking all the Water I'm supposed to, I think my hair, skin, and nails are all healthier. I know I am. Good luck to you. Becky

Make sure you are getting in lots of Protein. Hair loss is definitely a sign of a lack of protein. Make sure you are taking your Vitamins as well. I hope your hair loss stops. Good luck to you!

Hi Becky!

Babe this is something my doc addressed in the seminar; he said almost all his patients (bypass and band) lose hair somewhere from 3-6 months out, that the only one who ever needed a wig owned a wig shop (LOL) and that supplements (protein, multis, biotin) and other products (rogaine, nioxin) didn't really seem to help. He said that it seems to be related to the trauma of the surgery and that it always grows back.

In fact while I could tell I lost hair my hairdresser (who's been my hairdresser for 20 years now) said it never seemed noticeably thin to her. I'm past all that now; just hang in there and you'll be past it too.

It passes, but for me it was awful because I already have thin hair. I ended up getting extensions put in my hair for awhile but they were a pain and finally just dealing with my thin hair. However, I have noticed (I'm almost a year out) that it is starting to come back to my normal thin hair!

Hi Restless  You are so right. I just wanted to add that I was eating the Protein I was supposed to be eating, was drinking lots of Water, was taking Biotin, and was doing any other hint I found on here. NOTHING but time seemed to help. No one noticed but me. It would be a bit scary if you have thin hair to begin with, but it does come back. Becky

Thanks for this thread and all the replies. I noticed it around 5 months post op. I've used Biotin and now some horribly expensive Shampoo. Was heading for the Rogaine next. I'm very careful about my Protein intake, so thought maybe genetics had caught up to me. One question for those of you who had the Hair loss and it stopped, did your hair grow back?

I had some bad hair breakage and Hair loss during a past surgical procedure..non Band related.

It was from my having a perm, color and anesthesia.

I thought I was going to have to go out and buy some hair!

I found a product called Viviscal extra strength tabs..a fish supplement and it DOES work. It is pricey and can be found on sites like Amazon and ebay(cheaper).

To see any results, one has to take it for at least 3 months..But after those 3 months, my hair grew stronger and healthier than ever before.

Now..post Banding, I am continuing to take it a s a precaution along with Biotin from the drugstore.

Here is the site I get my Viviscal from(pink package).

The stuff DOES work, but it is expensive:

OH YEH...you are going to have the best nails you have ever had, too!

And no, I do not work for the company.

About 5 months post op my hair began to thin out. I was always the one getting comments about how thick my hair was and being charged extra at the salon!

At about 10 months my hair began coming back super thick. It's not all back yet but it will be and I am 14 months post op.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
