Some things I need to know

Recommended Posts

I was banded on June 9th. and started my full liquids today. Here are some of my questions. First I am really tired, sleepy tired not physically tired (does that make sense)? I started on a one a day chewable Vitamin yesterday.

Gas pains worse today then yesterday. Walking as much as possible. But probably not enough.

Now this is an embarrasing question. What about having bowl movements? I have not had one since the morning of my surgery. I am in no discomfort but wondered if that was because of the clear liquid diet. I have always been very regular and surely don't want this to become a problem.

Thanks a bunch!!

I went through the same things after surgery. It's your body adjusting that's causing you to be sleepy. As for the gas, you can try gas x strips, I hear they work! My gas pains went away after about 3 or 4 days. As for the bowel movements, I had the same exact problem! I was always regular but didn't have one for about 3 days after. My doctor said to try duloclax tablets, they are very tiny. They did the trick. Now I'm not as regular, but at least don't need laxatives anymore since I introduced Fiber into my diet. Just give your doc a call and see if it's ok for you to try a laxative. Best of luck!

Hi

Making sure that you take your daily Multivitamin is so important - especially while you're in the all liquid phase. This exhaustion is something that I had too. Give in to it and try taking an afternoon nap. Rest is so important when you are recuperating. I was so glad that I had two weeks off from work to adjust.

As far as the poop goes - less solids in, less solids out. At one point I was almost a week without #2. This will improve as you introduce more solid foods. You should consult with your doctor if it becomes uncomfortable.

Best wishes to you with your new band.

I love my band and my new flat tummy!

Sue

I agree with all the above posts about being tired. This was a very BIG issue for me.

Now regarding the BM'S you should try introducing BeneFiber into your liquids. BeneFiber is non-tasting, Water soluble powder. You can add it to anything. For me this was a life saver. I didn’t have a BM for 14 day post op and by that time I was so backed up it was painful.

You have changed your Protein to Fiber intake and have lowered the amount of carbs. This is a dramatic change to your caloric intake, and in its self will back up the normal person. Then take into account the fact you are eating (drinking, lol) a lot less.

The BeneFiber helped to set me straight and I haven’t had a problem since I started taking it. It does take about a day or so to regulate.

I too was very sleepy for days after surgery... Are you still taking pain meds? Once I got off the meds, I was fine. Plus, I have had several surgeries, and just the surgical process and all the drugs that are in your body takes a toll on it...

If you haven't stop the pain meds... I would do it!! Take care and good luck.

It's normal not to go to the bathroom for awhile. Some people are opposite and have the runs!! Pain pills slow things down too and make stool softeners necessary. I take them ongoing so have ongoing Constipation problems. I take colon cleansers sometimes and also use senokot-s from time to time to get things moving!! Hope this helps!! Being tired goes along with having surgery!! Get lots of rest and lots of protein!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
