Feeling full & depressed

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. Had my 1st fill yesterday-3cc's (don't know how much my band holds). I feel restriction and have had no problems eating, but have been in a funk ever since. I've been trying to figure out why all day and finally it came to me. I have a full feeling when I eat but not like before. I used to get "full" and now I just get a "full" feeling. Before LB I felt satisfied after I ate (I just ate way too much) and now I physically can't get any more food into my stomach and don't feel satisfied at all. Does any one understand what I'm talking about?

I think this really varies from person to person. I still get a satisfied full type feeling when I eat. However, I don't have an extremely tight band. I'm at 6.5 cc's now and feel some pretty good restriction. I can still eat all food groups, just much less than I did before being banded. I have seen posted on here many times where people have the same feeling that you're describing. I wonder why some people feel this and others don't?

Yes, I understand. It sounds like you are struggling more with head hunger.

I agree with Beth. I have my first fill this Thursday, and I know I need it because I can eat more than 1 c. of food, and I don't need to chew it to death. However, I do feel full after I eat, so I know I'm "satisfied".

Sometimes I have that feeling too, that I still want to eat. Or I'm not HUNGRY, but I want to eat. I have just been chalking it up to head hunger. We have been eating whatever we wanted for so long, that it is a very hard habit to break. Hang in there and stop eating when you are full - it will be worth it, and eventually, the head hunger thing has to get better too, as we have consistently better habits.

I also had my first experience with true depression last summer, about three months after my surgery. I was not losing weight, but still not eating like before surgery...I actually considered going on anti-depressants. My DOC THANKFULLY told me that the depression was a side effect of my taking away my ability to self-medicate with food. She suggested I learn to LOVE spicy foods, foods that burn your mouth. Peppers (and other hot food) burn your mouth and your brain then releases endorphins as a response...au natural anti-depressant! Worked VERY WELL for me. Enjoy Peppers!!

You are missing the emotional connection you have with food, rather than the feeding your body to sustain you. This takes some time to change, you need to learn that food is for survival and that you eat to nourish your body, not as your friend, comfort and best buddy, this is tough to learn and is something we all face to differing degrees after this lifestyle change. Hang in there, it will get better.

I felt the exact same way after surgery. But once I really started to see a difference on the scale and in the way I looked I didn't miss the satisfied feeling after I eat.
