Anybody In Ketosis????

Recommended Posts

I AM in a LARGE state of ketosis! I am a medical laboratory tech and a 4+ ketones is not good. What I failed to say is that I am also hypertensive which also affects the kidneys. I take blood preessure medicine for that but it still has an affect on your kidneys .

Ah, okay, I hear you on this. Yeah, very deep ketosis isn't a great place to be (and stay). So I'm not sure how you got so deeply there. I know during my liquid stage I was drinking Ensure and Boost Protein drinks which offer a lot of carbs. Also in the third week creamy Soups with extra milk. Lots o' carbs there. Also, fruit juices were a staple of my post surgery....much natural sugar and carbs. I hope that you and your nutritionist can find a right balance for you!

Let's just say that you're really new to this, and haven't yet realized that pretty soon there is going to be less swelling and you're going to be able to eat more. You won't be in ketosis for 6 months like your friend. You must chill. I know this isn't going to make me popular, but really...you are very restricted right now because of post op swelling. I"m willing to bet that we get another post from you in about two weeks that says something along the lines of "I CAN EAT TOO MUCH!". This is a process. Believe me when I say that with the band, nothing is ever predictable or long-lived. Sometimes you *can* have too much information and worry yourself to death.

The other thing is DEE DEE your friend did Atkins. The band doesn't work the same way as Atkins does. We balance our Protein and carbs and veggies. It isn't all or nothing. And if you are banded why would you try Atkins anyway?

It's all about being more mindful about your diet and the balancing act we play. Making better food choices and using this TOOL we were given.

I am sorry that your friend is in such grave health. Please do take care of yourself.

Wow, the media sure has done a numbers job on Atkins. Balancing Protein and carbs and veggies is EXACTLY what Atkins is about. Unfortunately people can't seem to get past the first chapters of the book where it says to eat very low carb to kick off ketosis. I always ignored that anyway. Eating moderate carbs (GOOD carbs like from veggies and milk) along with protein and staying away from refined sugars, flour, corn, and potatoes is exactly what Atkins is all about.

Dee, let us know what your nutritionist says. I'd say to quit eatin sugar free stuff an eat stuff with sugar in it just for a little while (pudding, popcicles, etc), or drink some fruit juice maybe. But let us know!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
