Dealing with a negative sibling..

Recommended Posts

I told my older brother about wanting to get banded. I thought he would be supportive, as he has always had a weight problem and just recently had a mild heart attack! Well, surprise, he was very negative!! He kept saying "Why would you want to put something foreign in your body like that?" I thought long and hard and this is what I asked him " If I needed a hip replacement, would you question that? How about if I needed to have my shoulder worked on and had to have pins implanted? Would that upset you? Better yet, what about the ear tubes I had put in? These are all medical tools used to improve my quality of life. Yet, the lapband is upsetting to you? I have been obese for so long and now, medical science has advanced enough to provide a tool for me to use. I am looking forward to bettering my life and I need all the love and encouragement I can get. Please, get on board with me here and be the supportive big brother." You know what? He cried. And then, he said "Of course Sis, you know I am there for you."

I should be a lawyer :ihih:

I couldn't have said it better myself. Good for you! You have to be an advocate for your own health, and it looks as if you've done that!

Great reply! And 100% correct, too! I'm going to have to write that one down. . . .

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
