When does the "lose 10%" come into play?

Recommended Posts

I am set to see the nutritionist on aug 17 and the dietician on Sept 16, surgeon on Sept 30. When does the first weigh in happen and is that when they tell you to lose the 10%? If they tell me on August 17 to lose 10% and I lose it by the surgeon appointment will that get me surgery quicker? My 10% will be about 22 lbs. Hope this isn't a stupid question. thanks

Hi Deb....do you know for sure your surgeon requires you to lose 10%? Because all docs are different. My doc didn't have a hard and fast 10% rule....but I had to do a 10 day pre-op diet.

If you know for sure you'll have to lose 10%, then why not start right now? Today's a great day to get the ball rolling!! You can do it!

According to Albany Med website he does require 10%. Since I am borderline with my bmi (38-39) and weight at 216 at my pcp appointment. I was unsure if I lose weight that puts my bmi lower if I would be turned down. Maybe I'll call them today and ask. Since I would have to lose about 20 lbs, it would give me more time to lose that amount before the surgeon appointment. thanks Deb

I would call and ask today if a lower bmi will affect you. Starting now could perhaps speed your process up a bit. Good luck to you!

I just called and was told to not start loisng any until I see the pa on July 27. She will do my first official weigh in and that will be my starting point. If that's the case I will need to lose about 20lbs in 2 months.( I would like to have my 10% done before I see the surgeon on sept. 30) I've done it before so I think I can do it once more. My problem is I can't keep it off. Like probably everyone here..

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
