I, too, have been struggling. I was banded February 24th 2009 and have lost only 20# mostly from the post op diet too. I have had three fills and am at 4cc in a 10cc band. I lost only 1# last month and my doc is not happy. He would not fill me this month and wants to see a several pound weight loss in the next 3 to 4 weeks before my next appointment. I am scared he won't fill me again if I don't lose the weight. I still have so many aches and pains in my knees when I exercise that I tend to avoid doing it. My intake is restricted a lot compared to pre banding but my calories must not be reduced enough. I can eat way more than a half cup of anything but only a third of what I could eat pre band. Anyway...hearing others struggle helps me feel not so alone. Right now I do feel like a bandster failure.

I always find these threads interesting. Someone complains about not having any weight loss and asks for advice.

Then the other posters ask what they've been eating and if they've been exercising, etc...

But then I rarely see the thread starter post in the thread again. That kind of makes it obvious why no weight loss is happening.

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this!!!

Original Poster Sven: I'm not losing weight.

The Rest of The Board: quack, quack, blah blah, talk talk talk

Original Poster Sven: *gone*

well, perhaps he lost some weight by walking away from this thread!:)

The key to this, I have found, is the fills. When you start losing restriction (can eat more) you may need another fill. I had 10 fills the first year (banded 12/7/07) and one just the other day. The wt loss is slow, but it always came off the best right after my fills. I would get a fill, lose 3-4 lbs, then stay the same weight until the next fill. To me, that was always the key - keeping up with fills.

Well,....the band is what you make it and by reading the last couple of posts, they were from people not yet banded. Im sure when THEY finally get their band they too will discover that having a band is NOT a clear cut solution. It takes a long time to adjust to they new way of life, and old habits die hard.If we were all so full of will power then we wouldnt need the band in the 1st place. It can be one hell of a struggle, and until you get the right restriction, you are still fighting the old cravings.

Lets try to help people out with positive words of encouragement, not its your own fault blah blah blah...

There are other reasons people get banded or other bypass procedures...there are other causes of obesity...genetics (my situation), emotional and physical issues, gender...and so on...in any type of surgery your recovery is what you make it...hopefully the band will help me deal with an inherited (against my will) issue as it will help those who have other struggles. :)

Well, we all get the band for the same reason in the end-to lose weight. Im sure we have all had enough of negative comments along the way when we have tried and failed to lose weight before.

I hope you will be one of the people who will have no problems after banding and find it easy, but for the majority of people who have had the band,we are only human and still find the weight loss an ongoing struggle. We certainly dont set out on this band journey to fail, but some may still find it difficult. Good luck with your band.:)

Happy banding and to everyone keep up the good work! x

That wasn't the point.

It's not about their old habits and willpower. It was about the people that make threads asking why the band isn't working for them. Then people ask what they're eating & if they're exercising, which they never respond to. That just makes it seem as if they're not doing what they're supposed to (which is ok). My point is about the question being asked in the first place and the non-responsive follow-up. If they are, in fact, not following the band rules... why would they ask the question in the first place? Seems to me if someone is doing everything they're supposed to and really wants to know why it's not working, they'd respond. Otherwise it appears as though they're avoiding the tough questions which will expose the truth.

I understand we all struggle and people struggle even after the band. I'm not disputing that. When I get the band, I'm sure I'll experience the same thing. I recognize that and wouldn't argue that. I would completely support someone who was having a hard time losing weight. I'm sure we've all experienced people who didn't understand or support us and we all know how hard that is.

(This may or may not apply to the thread starter, since they didn't really ask "Why is it not working for me?". It was more of a general statement)

Sounds like your Dr. is not very aggressive with fills. I had a bit of fill when the band was placed. I think my first fill was 3.5 cc and my second brought me up to probably around 5 cc which was perfect for me and I still lose 1 1/2 to 2 pounds a week. You will see should you follow the Nov bandster board, many of my fellow Nov bandsters have had many more fills due to conservative Dr's and many of them were frustrated and had no real restriction until they reached 6 or 7 cc's in their sz 10 bands. Your Dr. is being very tough and apparently does not believe that's possible, but surely all the people on this board who testify to needing over 4 cc's to feel restriction can't be lieing! So, unless you change Dr's, all you can do is go on a Liquid Protein diet again for a couple weeks and eat meat, poultry, fish or eggs at dinner time. Do this and drop some pounds quickly. Go back and tell him you starved to do it, get a fill, and hopefully you will soon have your restriction!! Good luck. By the way, I can't exercise much either due to severe arthritis and spinal disease needing surgery. Try a stationery bike and pool if you can access one. I do home physical therapy but wish I would start getting more other exercise too!!!

Not everyone has lots of problems and of course you will see people on here with lots of problems because the board is for help and support. Also, many of the successful people leave the board and go on with their lives. I frequent the board much less than I did in the past. I just had my 1 yr anniversary on Tuesday and I must say I was surprised how fast this past year went and how well it went. I had relatively few problems along the way and did find this board extremely helpful when I had questions and for encouragement. My weight loss was steady, not earth shaking, but added up to exactly 80 pounds on my anniversary date which far exceeded my expectations. I am thrilled with my band and with my new healthier body. Go ahead positively and plan to succeed. If you have a good Dr. and you are ready to do this, you will do fine! Best of luck to you with your surgery!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
