Has everyone had to go through pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

Im curious about this. My banding date is 7/7. I dont go into the doctors office to get pre op stuff till 7/2. What, i wonder, does pre op consist of? We've already done so much - the chest xrays, upper gi, ekg - more blood work?

I had thought great - i'd have one last "blast" on 4th of july weekend---are you guys saying that i'll probably be put on some liquid diet for the 5 days prior to my surgery????

Was it diet of entire liquids? ??

I'm sooooo wondering about this!

Most (but not all) doctors have some kind of preop diet. The majority of them seem to be 2 weeks prior to surgery going on a meal replacement/protein shake diet. However every doctor differs so its a good idea to check this now.

That way if you want to have a final blow out you can do it before the required diet.

I had no requirements up to the day before surgery. I actually spent a month visiting my favorite restaurants for one "last" meal. I did not over due it, ate normal but enjoyed it.

I don't miss them at all and am doing great 17 weeks out

I was told the purpose was to affect the liver. Our diets can affect the size of our liver (especially a high fat/high carb diet) and the liquid diet is supposedly to help reduce the liver size somewhat so that it doesn't get in the way during the operation.

You will have to repeat blood work no earlier than 7 days pre-op. That's SOP.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
