Tightness in chest and constant burping?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on the 26th of May and randomly throughout the whole day, I get this pain in the middle of my chest and have to burp to relieve it...this goes on ALL day...rather embarrassing at work  What is causing this?

Also, I am starting not to have any restriction at all - I can eat more and more each day it seems - will this continue until my first fill? Every time I drink liquids though, I get that pain again in the center of my chest for a minute, then it passes....will this last forever or go away as time goes on?

Thanks!

I have recently been having this problem and I let it go and it got completely out of hand and I am currently miserable. It could be you are developing some acid reflux. You may want to start trying Pepcid AC in the mornings and maybe start a daily dose of Prilosec. I have started this but it takes a few days to kick in so I am still miserable. Good luck.

I was banded on May 18th..and for the first week and a half...I had the same problem. I think it is just trapped gas from the surgery.

I went the costco one day with the family...and did ALOT of walking...I think that really broke up the gas in my body..that night i was burping and passing a lot of gas...and the chest tightness pretty much went away.

I am pretty sure it will pass soon...if not, give your Dr. a call.

I never had any of the tightness or burping until I had a fill. For me, it's a sign that I'm full. About your lack of restriction. I had the same thing happen to me. After surgery, I took it slow, but I was sooooo hungry. I finally went for a fill, and it got a little better. About a week later, I noticed that, once again, I was having little to no restriction. I went back to the doctor and found that 2 cc's of the saline had "dissolved" due to air in the band. He put me up to 5 cc's. It happened again; some of the saline "dissolved." He said that the band holds air, but that it should be gone now. Now, I'm at 7cc's, and I'm having A LOT of restriction. Don't worry, it takes time. Once you find the "Sweet Spot" for your band, everything will fall into place.

I am experiencing tightness and burning in the middle of my chest, also I can not keep Water or any liquid down due to the uncomfortable feeling I get when I drink water and end up throwing the water back up. However, the 2oz. of food I can deal with..its just water..I am so thirsty !! Someone please help?

swardlaw - If you have not been able to hold down liquids for 3 days, you are nearing an emergency situation!!!! Dehydration is not something to be triffled with. CALL YOUR DOCTOR NOW!!!

As for the tightness in the chest, try drinking slower and possible not drinking really cold stuff. Cold stuff tends to tighten your band which can cause some of the tight feelings. Also, even though you "think" you're drinking slow enough but may not be.

Your system is still a little new at this and it takes time to adjust. The type of pain you are describing is usually from eating or drinking too fast. Some people have what is called the first bite syndrom in which when they first start eating the first bites can be painful, then everything seems to mellow out. Sometimes drinking warm liquid prior to eating helps relax the stoma and helps with this.

Good luck and if I can be of any help, PM me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
