Soy milk vs. Regular

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

Just a little question here. I have read throughout these boards and have heard people mention soy milk. I myself am not a big milk drinker, however I know I will be mixing protien drinks with milk. Is there a big difference between soy and regular? Also while doing Atkins they said to drink regular milk as it has lower sugar than skim??? I am not sure which way to turn on this. My surgery is scheduled for Oct. 20 and I have to be on a pre op diet. If Soy milk is better for you could someone please tell me some good brands to buy?

THANKS guys!

I was never a milk drinker. It took years for me to taste soy milk because the thought grossed me out. Then I tasted it on a dare, and now I love the stuff. I had some this morning. Good stuff.

I just had surgery 9/8 in Texas and the dietician suggested soy milk or skim milk. My girlfriend had some soy milk and I tasted it and actually love it. As a matter of fact I am drinking it right now with my Protein Drink. I hate skim milk and the soy milk is great especially when I blend it up it taste like a milk shake. I have Silk soy milk enhanced.

I love soy milk - my mom is a health nut and recommends SILK as it has more nutrition or something over the other brands - I can't quite remember but she's a health nut and I trust her judgment since she researches everything that goes into her body - I love the vanilla flavored one.

I appreciate everyone's responses. I have bought some soy milk and actually love it! I am not a milk drinker at all. But I love this stuff. I worry though becuase there is like 11 carbs per 8 oz. thats kind of alot....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
