Banded 2 June - Melbourne

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Well I am now banded. I had to go into Western Private Tuesday at 5pm. I had no idea what time my surgery was scheduled. I ended up being Dr Nottle's final patient for the day. I went into theatre at approx 9.15 - waiting around for so long was awful!

I believe that all went well. I had a minimal amount of shoulder pain and some tenderness around the port when I came to so they gave me drugs and I was painfree the whole night. This didn't mean that i actually got any sleep though. What with being on a narrow bed, in an uncomfortable gown with some machine measuring my BP and then bleeping like crazy at me all night I don't think I managed to get more than about an hour.

I didn't have any nausea the first night which was great but have it now. Yesterday morning my arms felt heavy and shaky which I think was due to low blood sugar so was given some apple juice. Wow that tasted good although when you try and drink more later it starts being very sickly as it is so sweet.I started to feel nauseous whilst still in the hospital so they gave me another drug via the IV. Can't say this has helped though. I still feel nauseous whenever I am in any position except for lying down.

Left hospital at about 10.30 am yesterday and have been vegging around the house. Have walked around a little bit but find it hard due to the nausea.Pain is well under control.

My hubby very kindly decided to sleep in the spare room yesterday so I had the bed all to myself. It was great. I normally sleep on my side or stomach.I used a pillow next to my stomach which was a tremendous help - I was able to sleep on my side with no pain.

At the moment I am not hungry and have also been burping quite a lot. Will have to try to get some kind of Protein down a bit later. At the moment I am sipping a cup of warm tea and hoping that the nausea eventually subsides. The noises coming from my stomach at the moment are incredible.

So I am now on the other side and on my way:thumbup:

I also had heaps of burping after, still do at 3 weeks out. Be careful with the tea though, alot of people are told not to have it because it has some caffeine in it. 3 Weeks out and I have one in the morning to take my tablets but I also have to be careful with the amount of sugar. I have 3 teaspoon which to anyone would be alot but compaired to what I used to have it's a tiny amount. Good luck with everything and I hope you feel better soon =)

Congrats on being banded! I had bad nausea too. They were considering keeping me in hospital for a third night because of it. It eventually went away about 4 days after for me, so hope for you too so you're feeling better over the weekend.

I haven't been told not to drink anything with caffeine - in fact coffee and tea were two of the liquids listed on my meal plan for the liquid phase! I suppose all clinics have their own rules though.

Best of luck with your recovery.

Yes tea and coffee are on my list too. Dietician is quite happy with those - not fizzy, high cal or anything like that. In fact I don't think i'm capable of giving up tea I'm a complete teapot! I always drink it with LF milk and no sugar so it can't be that bad.

Nausea seems to have eased slightly tonight. Probably because I managed to get some Soup down. But you should hear the rumblings in my stomach - I swear they're so loud the people across the street can hear them!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
