Just starting the process

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am just beginning to investigate Lapband surgery. I have been overweight for years. 1990-91 was the last time I actually was "skinny" after I did a 6 month Medifast diet of liquids through a doctor. Since then I have put the weight back on plus a lot more. Have tried weight watchers, regular diets and all to no avail, I lose, I gain. I am so tired of this process but still not convinced Lapband is the route for me either? I'd like to hear pros and cons please and thanks!

Hi Nursemarti,

I haven't had the surgery yet so it's hard for me to say, but there is evidence of the pros and cons all over this website, you just need to take the time to read through the posts a

:-)

There are pros and cons for anything but the way I looked at it was there were far more cons for staying overweight. Having the band was the best decision I ever made, I hope it will be the same for you. Good luck.

Hi nursemarti. I'm kind of researching lapband too and after reading through the information, I'm kind of moving more and more towards getting it done. I just got to go through whole process of contacting my Insurance Carrier and then go from there. I tried all kinds of dieting methods too and yes it did work for a little bit and then I gained it all back plus some. I've always been overweight and being Samoan doesn't help me out either since we Samoans love to EAT .... LoL. We'll see how it goes.

For me it was overweighed more by the pros. Being healthy, Living past 30, having a happy life, not needing more medical interventions. The only cons? The fact that the band might erode or slip but for me the pros far outweighed any risk.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
