What did you do with your clothes once too big?

Recommended Posts

Donate? Sell on eBay? Garage sale? Other?

I have a professional position so I do have a lot of really nice clothing - a whole range of sizes. :frown:

I'm not hip on garage sales or eBay. I suppose I could donate it.

It's just that I know how hard it is to find nice stuff in larger sizes and I sort of wish I could help someone out. Maybe give it directly to a person in need - someone entering the workforce or something - rather than drop it off at the GoodWill truck.

What did you do with your too-big clothing?

If you donate them you can use that as a tax write-off.

If you sell them you make moola to buy new ones.

I like to donate. It's a tax write off and it goes to a good cause. I dont throw any away unless the are really stained or beyond repair. I live in SoCal, so I know that what goodwill can't use they re-donte to charities south of the border.

I donate. My mom grew up during the depression and almost didn't get to graduate from high school because she didn't have any clothing to wear. A family member who was better off gave her 2 old dresses and she wore one and washed the other every day. She told me about that one day when I was a grown up and from then on I don't ever sell my clothes. They are given...to a friend, or to a charity.

Aww that's an inspiriring story:smile2:. I donate mine to Goodwill because when I was little my mom had a hard time being a single mom of three so we often had to go there for new clothes. I know it was a lot easier for her buying pants for all of us for a couple dollars rather than 10 or 15 bucks a pair at Walmart. Also because plus sizes are so expensive, and there they can be bought by people who have been in this position but dont have alot of money to go to places like Lane Bryant.

My doctor has a closet in his office we are using for a "clothing exchange" also when we meet at our support group we have access to it. It helps everyone out.

Unfortunately for mee all my "old" closes are smaller ones I have kept throughout the years hopeing to fit in to them and because I am rather large still I havent met anyone as big as me to share with.....

Hope this helps...

Gleefully, joyfully dump them in a brotherhood bin - so donate!

I've never found ebay worth the effort for stuff like second hand clothes, so much hassle photographing, listing etc for a few bucks. I need a million bucks, not a few, so I'd rather give them to someone who can benefit.

OMG! What a great thread. I came here tonight specifically for this same reason. MY pile for "too big for me now" clothes keeps growing. Part of me is afraid to get rid of them. Another part of me says "don't look back, girl!"

I'll probably take them to a homeless shelter.

Oh my...poor us....what a problem to have...huh?..lol

Wow that is terrific, I know in the office where I work we have a couple of people in the 400 lb range and they have a really hard time getting and paying for clothes, so I am sure that anyone that you donate to would be very grateful to have them.

We generally donate everything. I just don't have the time to sell it.

I just wish I could make a more personal impact to someone, help them out. I know donating helps people out and that's what I'll probably do. But I don't feel like I SEE the impact of my donation.

I gave all my baby stuff to very pregnant woman whose boyfriend fell from a roof and was laid up with no income and they had no insurance etc. etc. It just felt so good to personally help them. I don't care about the tax write-off as much as the satisfaction.

Maybe I'll check craig's list. I can already give away 22s and 24s. Even my 20s are starting to be loose and I can fit into some 18s.

Linda,

Check to see if there is a "Dress for Success" charity near you. I always hear good things about it.

The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

Google "Dress for Success" to read more about them, - I'm sure they'd love to have your professional attire.

Congrats on your successful weight loss!!

I just donated 3 large garbage bags full of clothes to FISH (catholic charity in the area, sort of like Goodwill). You could also contact a local church and see if they have a clothing exhange. Goodwill is also good. Check with local bariatric surgeons if yours doesn't have a clothing exchange to see if they would take them. When you're changing sizes quickly, it gets expensive!

It can be kind of delicate subject to bring up to an individual about giving them your clothes. But homeless shelters, battered women shelters, vocational career centers...many would appreciate clothes like yours that may help someone get a job and/or look professional.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
