Newly Banded -- Weight Loss Has SLOWED!

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone! I'm new to this site, but I'm hoping someone can help me calm my fears...

I was banded on 5/21/09. The first week, I lost 16 lbs. This last week, I lost NOTHING!! Not a pound!! I have been eating 4 oz. of Protein every 3 hours (although I'm hungrier for more at a time... is that normal after just 2 weeks?!?), and walking for exercise as recommended.

Why would I lose so much in the first week only to have NO weight loss the second week?? Has anyone else had a similar experience? Please help, thanks!!

hi there, from what i have been reading on the boards (I'm not banded yet) it seems this is normal your body has to adjust to everything that has happened. I'm sure there will be more comments to come from others that have a lot more experience. best wishes

This is normal, your first week or so you are on liquids and it is very hard to get the necessary calories that way, once you start back on food your weight loss levels out, just keep following the program and it will start again but will be slower. If you are not using an online food journal I recommend that it counts your calories, protien and so on and gives you a good idea of what is working and not... Good luck, I hope to be on food soon too, I was just banded the 28th.

I have learned that most who lose a lot at first do it by just dieting...no assistance from the band. Since I never got the band thinking I'd diet (counting calories, weighing portions, that makes me NUTS. I think about food 24/7...very counter-productive). Now that I finally FINALLY have restriction weight is dropping off and I'm not weighing a thing, not "journaling" (been there, done that, got the 4X t-shirt LOL)

So if you want to lose until your band is adequately tightened, pick your favorite diet once you have finished the post op diet your surgeon gives you. Or you can wait for the band to do it's thing; but it does not happen immediately.

Glad you liked it! :)

I was pretty proud of myself for realizing that dieting just DOES NOT work for me because I become so consumed by food that I almost can't function. Am I going to be hungry did I eat enough did I eat too much Can I have that? Do I even LIKE that? Etc etc. AND OMG I can only have this bread and the store is out can I travel 10 miles I have to have it

BAH!

Drove me insane.

But weight is falling off now that I have the band and I have never been more free of worrying about food in my entire life. It is a miracle.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
