Questions about Liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I am still in the process of getting all my pre-testing done so as yet I don't have a surg date scheduled. I was wondering about the liquid diet 1 month prior to surgery to lose fat in the liver. I was told to lose 25 pounds before my surgery. :(

1. What kind of liquids did you guys use?

2. How helpful were they and can I get them premixed?

My surgeon put me on the Optifast liquid diet for 1 week prior to surgery. It comes in a powder and pre-mixed drink. I was able to purchase this directly from my surgeon's office. I lost about 6-7 lbs.

Most doc's will have their own plan that they want you to use, mine pre op diet was this.

Protein drink for Breakfast

Protein Drink for lunch

dinner was 3 oz of Protein with a non starchy vegetable

They also gave a list of 100 calorie items I could have if I was still hungry, the diet was for 2 weeks but I did it for 3 to be on the safe side and I lost 30 lbs.

I used and still use a Protein Powder called body fortress, I get the vanilla because I can add fruit or sugar free pudding mix or Peanut Butter. I use milk and add crushed ice and my favorite tool ever, my immersion stick blender from cusinart.

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions.

I agree w/jujuvee, most docs have a preop plan for you.

Mine was very similar to hers and was 64 oz Water per day, 2-3 of a specific shake, and 3-4 oz of lean chicken/turkey/fish and up to 1 cup of a green veggie. no sugar no butter no breading no nothing else but more Water.< /p>

I cheated on it, lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks, didn't get the band. I stuck to it for 17 days lost 17 more pounds and got banded that time.

Thanks guys, this has been really helpful. My doctor didn't give me any specifics to speak of. He just said to take a liquid Protein meal twice a day and eat a sensible dinner. If knew what a sensible dinner looked like I wouldn't be in this shape. There are so many Protein drinks out there. I wasn't sure how much Protein I needed twice a day. So I thought I would ask those who have been through the process. I knew you guys would know what worked best since you have all been there done that.

BTW, Would a lean cuisine be considered a sensible meal?

Thanks again.

Hi, my doc recommended prescriptfit, which you can find at: PrescriptFit, Medical Nutrition Therapy and Weight Loss Plan

Figure 2 tubs/week. I'm a vegetarian so I didn't try the Soup. But, the shakes are very filling. I know with slimfast and such, I was hungry w/in a 1/2 hour after drinking them. The prescript fit shakes kept me full for 3 to 4 hours. I lost 10 pounds the first two weeks on the shake. And that included one meal out with friends to olive garden.

Good luck

I bought AdvantagEDGE low carb Protein drink. It's pre-mixed. 110 calories/ 17 grams of Protein. Tasted great- Choc fudge. Drank 5 per day and had Soup as well. for 3 weeks prior to surgery. Was able to lose 30 lbs in that time period.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU.....

I was supposed to do liquids for 2 weeks prior; ended up 3 weeks because I caught a slight cold and they bumped my surgery a week, not enough time to stop and restart, so I just stayed on it for another week. They didn't give me a specific amount to lose, just wanted to shrink my liver. I lose 25 pounds in the 3 weeks (plus 10 on the 6 month diet my insurance required) so I was 35 lbs down by surgery day. The rest has come off since surgery. I am actually about 144 now. They keep changing the web site and I have to find my way back into my profile to update my current weight.

As for what I could have, Protein shakes, Water (I think the 64 oz per day is pretty universal), surgar free Jello, sugar fee popsicles, tea, coffee, juice (diluted 50% with water), yogurt, chicken broth (chicken noodle was ok for mushy stage post-op) stuff like that. Until 4 days before surgery I could have a small amount of lean Protein (they didn't tell me to have a sensible meal or veggies) so in the evening I would grill two chicken tenders (unbreaded, frozen from Costco) or two hard boiled eggs, both with a little salt and pepper. Four days before surgery, just liquids.

For protein drinks, they suggested AdvantEdge or Atkins, but my sister found some drinks that I liked better. For grab and go capability, Worldwide Protein Shakes are great. 35g protein, only about 4carbs, 1sugar, and maybe 1.5fat. They come in vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, banana Cream, and Cookies n' Cream (tastes like Oreos). Trader Joe carries Vanilla and chocolate (plus 21g protein in same flavors). Best place to get all flavors is the Vitamin Shoppe. They are $2.79 individually, but if you buy a 12 pack for $27.99 they are about $2.33 each. GNC carries Vanilla and Chocolate in the store and the others online, but they are $2.99 each. Vitamin Shoppe sells them online also and free shipping for $99 or more (My last order I had a $20 off for $100 purchase so I ordered enough that the price stayed over $99 and got free shipping too--it was like getting a free 12 pack--the coupons are from joining their reward points program--$25 or so off my order is nothing to sneeze at). Online ordering? Go to vitaminshoppe.com.

Another Protein Drink that is good if you like powders to mix in unjury (usually advertised at the bottom of these pages). It comes in Vanilla, Chocolate, strawberry, Chicken Soup (like chicken broth), and unflavored (you can drop some of this in other things to bump up the protein content). Go to unjury.com for that.

I hope this helps. Good luck on your journey.

You guys have been great!

I have found this info most helpful. I think I can make some better choices after weighing the suggestions I have gotten here. I see my doctor again tomorrow for the swallow test and I'll ask him more questions as well.

I'm getting excited!

I am on the road to getting my health back and kissing my diabetes and high blood pressure goodbye.

You gals are fab-u-los!

Thanks again

If you want to check out more about PrescriptFit, their website is a great resource www.drdiet.com They have products that can be used for both pre and post op. The site also has a video testimonial from a bariatric surgeon. They offer shakes, Soups and puddings that are fortified with amino acids that help decrease sugar and starch cravings and also help to increase satiety (feeling of being full). The Protein used is egg, which is a higher quality protein than whey or soy (plus it tastes better than whey). You can order online or from clinics that carry the products.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
